Chapter Fourteen: Fire or Crown
The City Trembles
New York did not know it was on the brink of war.
Cars still moved. Lights still glowed. People still laughed in rooftop bars and hurried through subway stations.
But beneath it all, something ancient had awakened.
And it was spreading.
*****
Jason
Jason stood at the center of the Council Chamber.
Not as a son.
Not as a prince.
But as a man who had chosen his side.
The chamber was no longer unified. Raised voices clashed like steel. Alphas argued openly, alliances splintering in real time.
“She attacked Council agents!” one roared.
“She defended herself!” another countered.
“She is an anomaly!”
“She is proof of evolution!”
Jason stepped forward.
“Enough!"
His voice cut through the chaos like a blade.
Silence followed, but it was tense, volatile.
King Alpha Bon rose slowly, his gaze like ice. “You dare stand here after abandoning your post?”
“I didn’t abandon anything,” Jason said steadily. “I stepped away from corruption.”
Gasps rippled through the chamber.
Queen Anastasia’s lips curved coldly. “Careful, Jason.”
“No,” he said, eyes blazing. “You be careful. Because I’ve seen the records. The relocations. The lies. You didn’t protect the system, you manipulated it.”
The chamber erupted again.
“You speak treason!” an elder snapped.
Jason didn’t flinch.
“I speak truth.”
He turned, sweeping his gaze across them all. “You hunted a woman for existing. You imprisoned her mother for knowing too much. And now you call her the threat?”
His father’s voice came low, dangerous. “You are blinded by attachment.”
Jason’s chest rose and fell. “No. I’m finally seeing clearly.”
He took a step forward, closer than he had ever dared stand against them.
“If you go after her again,” he said quietly, “you go through me.”
That was it.
The line had been drawn.
*****
Cassandra
The mountain compound had become a war ground overnight.
Bosco’s men fortified every entry point. Scouts moved through the trees. Signals crackled through encrypted lines.
Cassandra stood at the edge of the courtyard, watching it all unfold.
Watching the world respond to her.
“I never wanted this,” she whispered.
Cicilia stood beside her. “No one ever does.”
Jay clung to her leg, unusually quiet, sensing the shift in the air.
“They’re fighting because of me,” Cassandra said.
“They’re fighting because of what you represent,” Cicilia corrected gently. “You’re not the cause. You’re the catalyst.”
Cassandra’s hands trembled.
“I don’t know how to lead,” she admitted.
“Leadership isn’t knowing,” Cicilia said. “It’s choosing.”
Behind them, Bosco approached, his presence cutting through the tension.
“Scouts confirm movement,” he said. “Multiple factions. Not just Council loyalists.”
Cassandra turned. “What does that mean?”
“It means,” Bosco said grimly, “this isn’t controlled anymore.”
*****
Maxwell
Maxwell didn’t wait for permission.
He arrived at the compound just before dusk, his SUV skidding to a halt as armed men raised weapons instinctively.
“Stand down,” Bosco ordered.
Maxwell stepped out, eyes immediately finding Cassandra.
Relief flickered followed by something deeper.
“She’s safe?” he asked.
“For now,” Bosco replied.
Maxwell walked straight to Cassandra.
“You disappeared,” he said quietly.
“I had to.”
“I know.” His voice softened. “I just, needed to see you.”
Their eyes held.
For a moment, the chaos faded.
“You’re at the center of this,” Maxwell continued. “Whatever this is, you’re not alone in it.”
Her throat tightened. “You don’t even know the truth.”
“Then tell me when you’re ready,” he said simply. “Until then, I stand with you.”
Bosco watched the exchange carefully.
Jason wasn’t the only one choosing sides.
*****
Lyra
Lyra had lost control.
And she hated it.
The Council chamber no longer echoed her influence. Whispers followed her now, not admiration, but suspicion.
She stood before Queen Anastasia, fury barely contained.
“You said this would work,” Lyra snapped. “You said removing her would stabilize everything!”
The Queen’s gaze was cold, calculating. “You acted prematurely.”
“You encouraged it!”
“I expected precision,” Anastasia said sharply. “Not recklessness.”
Lyra’s hands shook. “Jason has turned against us. The Council is dividing. This is because of her!”
“No,” the Queen said quietly. “This is because you forced the board before the pieces were in place.”
Lyra stepped back, stunned.
“So what now?” she demanded.
The Queen’s expression darkened.
“Now,” she said, “we remind them what happens to those who defy the crown.”
*****
Jason
Jason didn’t return to the estate.
He didn’t return to safety.
He returned to the mountains.
This time, not in secret.
When he stepped into the compound, weapons lifted, but Bosco raised a hand.
“Let him through.”
Jason’s gaze locked onto Cassandra instantly.
She stood in the fading light, wind catching her hair, something powerful and uncontainable radiating from her.
He stopped a few feet away.
“I told them,” he said.
Her breath caught. “Told them what?”
“That they don’t get to decide your fate anymore.”
Silence stretched.
Then she whispered, “You shouldn’t have done that.”
“Too late,” he said with a faint, broken smile.
Cassandra stepped closer.
“You don’t understand what you’ve stepped into.”
“Then help me understand,” he said.
Their eyes met with the past, present, and something inevitable colliding.
Behind them, Maxwell watched.
Bosco watched.
And the weight of the choice pressed down on her.
*****
The Choice
Night fell.
The compound gathered in the courtyard, consisting of Bosco’s men, Maxwell, Cicilia, Jason.
All eyes turned to Cassandra.
Because whether she wanted it or not, this was her war now.
Cassandra looked at Jay, asleep in Cicilia’s arms.
Looked at Jason who appeared defiant, unwavering.
She turned to Maxwell who was steady, grounding.
She then cast her eyes at Bosco, apparently protective, fierce.
She inhaled slowly.
“If I walk away,” she said, voice steady, “they’ll keep hunting. Not just me. Anyone like me.”
No one spoke.
“If I fight,” she continued, “people will die.”
“They already are,” Bosco said quietly.
Her chest tightened.
Jason stepped forward. “You won’t be alone.”
Maxwell added, “You’ll have us.”
Cassandra closed her eyes.
For years, she had survived by staying invisible.
Now the world demanded she be seen.
She opened her eyes.
And made her choice.
“I won’t run anymore,” She said.
Power flickered in the air.
“I won’t hide.”
The ground beneath them seemed to hum.
“I will stand.”
A distant explosion shattered the night.
Everyone turned.
Flames rose beyond the tree line, but too close.
Bosco’s voice snapped into command. “Incoming strike, move now!”
Gunfire erupted.
Shouts filled the air.
Jay woke screaming.
Cassandra’s heart dropped as a single, chilling realization hit her.
The Council hadn’t waited.
They had come.
And this time, they hadn’t come to capture.
They had come to destroy.
