The Correction

Chapter Twenty: The Correction The ground did not shake. It yielded. ***** The Arrival The forest didn’t part for them. It bowed. Trees bent unnaturally, roots tearing through soil as something vast and ancient pressed forward, not rushing, not hunting, arriving. Every instinct in the clearing reacted at once. Wolves lowered their heads. Alphas stiffened. Even the Council, fell silent. Cassandra felt it like a weight against her chest. Not fear. Not exactly. Something deeper. Judgment. ***** Cassandra Jay whimpered softly in her arms, his small body pressing closer to her. “It’s okay,” she whispered, though her voice lacked certainty. Because nothing about this felt okay. The air had thickened. Even her power, vast and newly awakened, felt… watched. Measured. She swallowed hard. “What is that?” she asked, not taking her eyes off the approaching shadows. No one answered immediately. Because no one wanted to. ***** Eryndor Eryndor stepped forward, something like tension threading through his otherwise composed posture. “They are the first line,” he said quietly. Cassandra glanced at him. “First line of what?” His answer was simple. “Balance.” ***** The Correction Revealed They emerged slowly. Three figures. Not massive in size. But overwhelming in presence. Their forms shifted subtly, human outlines bending into something more abstract, more fluid, as if they were not bound by the same physical rules as everyone else. Their eyes held no color. Only depth. Endless depth. Bosco cursed under his breath. “I don’t like this.” Maxwell didn’t respond. Because for once, he didn’t have an answer. ***** Jason Jason stepped slightly in front of Cassandra, his body tense. “Stay behind me,” he said again. This time, she didn’t argue. Not because she needed protection. But because something told her that this wasn’t a fight he could win. ***** The First Voice One of the figures stepped forward. Its voice didn’t echo. It didn’t carry. It simply existed everywhere at once. “Imbalance confirmed.” The words sent a chill through every living being present. The King straightened. “You have no authority here.” The figure turned its gaze to him. And for the first time, King Alpha Bon hesitated. “Authority,” the entity repeated softly. “Is irrelevant.” ***** The Accusation The second figure spoke. “Bloodline interference detected.” The third followed. “Temporal distortion confirmed.” Their attention shifted. Not to the Council. Not to the battlefield. To Cassandra. “Source identified.” ***** Cassandra Her breath hitched. “They’re talking about me,” she whispered. Eryndor didn’t deny it. “They are,” he said. Her grip on Jay tightened. “I didn’t do anything wrong,” she said, louder now. The first figure tilted its head. “Incorrect.” The word hit like a blow. ***** The Judgment “You altered the exchange,” the entity said. Cassandra’s mind raced. “The… exchange?” Eryndor stepped beside her. “The life you restored,” he said quietly. “The balance you shifted.” Her heart dropped. “Jay,” she whispered. The second figure spoke. “Life reclaimed beyond permitted threshold.” The third added: “Correction required.” ***** Jason “No,” Jason said immediately. He stepped forward, placing himself fully between Cassandra and the entities. “You don’t get to decide that,” he said, his voice firm despite the tension ripping through him. The first figure regarded him. “You are not relevant.” Jason’s jaw tightened. “Try me.” For a brief second, the air grew heavier. Testing. Measuring. Then, the entity spoke again. “Attachment noted.” ***** Bosco Bosco raised his weapon instinctively. “Enough of this,” he said. “You want her, you go through all of us.” The figures didn’t react. Didn’t flinch. Because to them, that statement meant nothing. ***** Cassandra Her pulse roared in her ears. “They’re going to take him,” she whispered. Eryndor’s voice was quiet. “They will attempt to restore balance.” “By killing my son?” she demanded. He didn’t answer. He didn’t need to. ***** The Offer The first figure stepped closer. “Correction path available.” Cassandra’s breath hitched. “What does that mean?” “Exchange.” Her stomach twisted. “No.” “Life for life,” the entity said. Her voice shook. “I already paid that price.” The second figure responded. “Insufficient.” ***** The Choice The third figure stepped forward. “New exchange required.” The air went still. Cassandra’s heart pounded. “What exchange?” The entity’s gaze locked onto her. “You.” ***** Shockwave Jason’s world stopped. “No.” The word came out raw, immediate. Bosco’s expression darkened violently. “Over my dead body.” Maxwell stepped forward too, tension radiating from him. “That’s not happening.” But Cassandra didn’t move. ***** The Terms “Your existence is the imbalance,” the entity said. Cassandra swallowed. “If I go… he lives?” The answer came without hesitation. “Balance restored.” Her breath caught. ***** Jason “No,” Jason said again, stepping in front of her. “You don’t even think about it.” She looked at him. And for a moment, everything else disappeared. “I can’t lose him,” she whispered. “And I can’t lose you,” Jason shot back. Her eyes softened, pain flickering through them. “You already did once.” That hit harder than anything else. ***** Bosco Bosco stepped closer, voice low and dangerous. “You don’t get to make that decision alone.” Cassandra didn’t look at him. “Bosco…” “No,” he said sharply. “I didn’t fight this hard to get you back just to watch you walk into death.” Her chest tightened. “You won’t lose me,” she said softly. “That’s exactly what you said before everything went wrong,” he snapped. ***** Maxwell Maxwell moved closer too. “This isn’t balance,” he said. “This is execution.” The entities didn’t react. Because to them, it was neither. ***** Eryndor Eryndor finally stepped forward. “This is not the only path,” he said. All eyes turned. Even the entities paused. “You would challenge correction?” one asked. Eryndor’s gaze was steady. “I would propose an alternative.” ***** The Twist Cassandra’s heart pounded. “What alternative?” Eryndor looked at her. “Integration.” The word hung heavy. “What does that mean?” Jason demanded. Eryndor’s voice lowered. “It means she doesn’t leave.” A pause. “But she doesn’t remain the same.” ***** The Truth of Integration Cassandra’s breath slowed. “Explain.” Eryndor stepped closer. “You merge fully with the source you’ve awakened.” Her stomach twisted. “The Null Vein?” He nodded. “You become its living conduit.” Jason’s blood ran cold. “And what does that do to her?” Eryndor didn’t look away. “It removes the imbalance.” “And her?” Jason pressed. A beat. Then, “She ceases to exist as she is.” ***** Silence The weight of that settled over everything. Cassandra felt it sink into her bones. “You’re asking me to… disappear.” Eryndor’s voice softened. “To transform.” ***** The entities spoke again. “Proposal acknowledged.” A pause. Then it continued. “Time limit imposed.” The air tightened sharply. “Decision required.” The ground beneath Cassandra began to crack again, this time not from her power, but from the pressure of something far greater closing in. “Choose,” the entity said. Cassandra stood frozen. Jay in her arms. Jason at her side. Bosco behind her. Maxwell watching. Her entire world, on one side. The unknown, on the other. Her voice came barely above a whisper. “…I…” Just then, the sky split open again. But this time, something began to descend. Not light. Not darkness. Something far worse. Something that made even the entities turn. Eryndor’s expression changed for the first time. “...No,” he whispered. Cassandra’s heart dropped. “What is it?” His answer came like a warning. “The consequence of waiting too long.”
