Sophie skims through the menu and names an easy, alto breakup song. Tyler finishes queuing it up for her, and there are cheers at the opening chords. Sophie can carry a tune, and that’s about all. She’s a chorus singer for many reasons. Nobody seems to notice any of those reasons today, least of all her. She rushes the verses far ahead of the machine’s beat and belts the chorus through tight vocal chords. And everyone’s smiling and clapping along. I could do better, but I’m not doing it. She’s doing it. When it’s finally over, she takes an animated bow and practically skips back down from the machine. Aaron and Xander both pat her clumsily on the back, their coordination already slipping. I think I missed a round of beer. “See!” Sophie tells me. “It’s easier than real performing.
