Chapter Two: Don't Kill Me! Athena's eyes are filled with fear at that moment. She had yet to grasp what was happening when Brian roughly pulled her up and held her chin in a way that made her whimper in pain as his eyes glared at her. "What did you do?! You who's nothing! Did you forget who I am? I am the great manager of Montgomery Star! While you are nothing but an orphan, I married out of pity!" Brian hit her face again, and Athena tried to cover her face, so Brian went for her stomach instead. She can feel his anger and hate with every hit. He was like an animal that was unaffected by her cries of pain and mercy. Athena screamed when he grabbed her hair and stared into her eyes. "Do you want to know why I never touched you?" He asked with a malicious grin on his face. He dragged her by the hair, and she couldn't do anything but claw at his hands and scream until they reached the mirror, and he roughly made her face it. Athena stared at her pitiful reflection with tears in her eyes. "Look at yourself! Did you think you're beautiful? I am disgusted by that pale and fake innocence! I always preferred Vera over you. She's pretty and sexy, and she's not undesirable like you! You mean nothing to me, Athena!" Each word felt like a stab to Athena's heart, and it hurt more than his physical assault. When he lets her go, Athena crumbles on the ground and cries. "Why am I here then? Why did you marry me?" She asked him with pain in her voice. "For my children, what else? You are their maid in disguise as their stepmother. That is your only use for me because taking care of them is the only thing you're actually good at." Her knees were weak and shaking, but she still tried her best to stand up. She wanted to hurt him as well, but he didn't give her the chance to go when he slapped her again, and it made her dizzy. What's the use of fighting when it's clear that he's stronger than her? "You are useless, Athena!" After breaking her heart with his harsh words, Brian left. Athena's eyes found the door, and she knew she had to leave. But before she could attempt to do so, the man came back and manhandled her before showing her some papers. "Sign these papers!" "What are they?" She asked in a shaking voice. "My freedom from you, our divorce paper. And once you sign this, you will give everything to me." With tears clouding her vision, Athena glared hatefully at Brian. "I will not sign anything without my lawyer!" At what she said, Brian squeezed her arm, making her whimper. "Oh, you will, you w***e, or I will kill you." He threatened her with the promise of his words in his eyes. Athena cannot recognize the man she married, and he's now starting to look like a stranger in her eyes. Brian forced her to hold a pen despite her resistance, so she threw it away. What she did was like fuel to the fire because Brian grabbed her hair again and slammed her face to the table, making her scream in pain. Athena found it hard to breathe, and she tried to fight him until he let her go and distanced himself. Athena knew that was her only chance to escape, but she couldn't feel any strength in her knees. Her heart stopped when she heard his footsteps and the sound of a gun clicking. That is when she found the strength to stand up and walk away from him. "You'll kill me?!" Athena exclaimed in disbelief. "I can and I will without any second thought, Athena. I will kill you, and I will tell everyone that you tried to kill me. That you went crazy, and they will believe me because I am a man, and they witnessed how shallow and crazy you were earlier for what you did! Who will be on your side when you are a nobody? You are alone in this world, Athena. You are no one!" "Don't kill me!" Athena pleaded for her life with her hands in the air because she still wanted to live. "You don't want me to? Then sign the damn papers." Athena nodded before inching to the table where the papers were. She picked up the pen before signing it without reading it. Brian took them from her and pointed the gun at her, making Athena's eyes widen in fright. She should have known that he was a monster and that he would kill her even if she did what he wanted! Athena forced herself to think despite the fear numbing her whole body. Then, her eyes saw the vase, and she didn't think twice before throwing it in Brian's direction when he walked closer. She took that as a chance to run for her life. She didn't think, she didn't slow down, and she didn't look back. She just ran for it. Athena knew she had nowhere to go, so where would she go and ask for help? Brian is right; she had no one, not even a friend. Her world revolved around him and his children. Brian can ruin his life if he wants, and he wouldn't even need to put much effort into it. Athena slowed down because she was starting to feel tired, so she hid behind a bush and cried in fear. She covered her mouth and tried not to breathe when she heard footsteps. She thought it was Brian, so she crossed the street in panic, but she failed to see a car coming her way until she heard the loud sound of the brake, but it was too late because it hit her frail body and her body hit the ground. Athena moaned in pain, and thought she was dying. The man in the car panicked and cursed. His heart pounded as he went to check on the person he found to be a woman. He crouched down and removed her hair from her face to see a pale face full of bruises and wounds. "Have I killed her?" The man thought out loud before checking her pulse. He fished his phone out of his suit and dialed a number. "This is Phoenix Montgomery. I hit a woman, and we're close to King's House. Send an ambulance this instant!" He demanded with authority in his voice. The man on the other line felt like shitting their pants and scrambled to do what Phoenix asked. Athena weakly tried to open her eyes and saw a man before her. In her blurry vision, she saw a tall, muscular man with a dangerous aura. "Don't worry. Help is coming," the stranger said in a baritone voice, and it was void of any emotion. "Don't kill me, please." She pleaded in a small voice and lost consciousness.
