Chapter Sixteen: Athena, I Thought of Forgiving You
When they arrived at the mansion, Athena carried Mary to her room to tuck her in.
"Mommy, am I your only child?" Mary asked out of nowhere to leave Athena speechless.
The question squeezed her heart in pain when she remembered Jean, Emily, and Liam, her other children. She thought about what to say, then smiled as she caressed her hair.
"You are my treasure, and I'm always here for you," she told Mary instead of answering her question.
And that is not a lie, but not the truth... yet. Because even if she just met the little girl, and even if she's not her real mother, Mary is starting to occupy a space in her heart.
The little child's heart was happy at what she heard from her mother, and she hugged her tight.
