5 EVELYN – DECEMBER 1930 Evelyn pulled her brown sweater tighter against the frigid air in the long hallway. It was little protection against the cold that chilled her to the bone and turned her fingers blue. Viola had taken the sweater away from her after Evelyn pulled it from the donation bag first, then after Evelyn begged, gave it back. Evelyn was happy to have it, even though it was thinly woven and the cold air found its way in. This winter was harder than last year, and even the year before that.
