His Keeper

Chapter 5

The way home was quiet. Everyone still in shock and disbelief of what was supposed to have been a joyful time had changed with a loud crash echoing through the night air. Nate and his parents pulled into the drive way where his sisters, Jeff and Adrian were waiting in anticipation on the porch steps for them to return. His sisters went to Nate and walked with him into the house with their arms wrapped around his waist. They all sat in the living room with soft music playing in the background. They all just sat and listened knowing no real words could bring any comfort. They all knew just being there with their son, brother, and brother at arms was the best thing they could do.

            Nate was given the approval to stay behind for the funeral by his commander. Jeff and Adrian on the other hand were due back; however, before they left, they told him they got him covered and were so sorry for his loss. They were sorry they couldn’t have done more to take away the pain and loss he is feeling. Once the two members of the wolfpack left to report for duty, both of Nate’s sisters spent a lot of time with him just to help him in any way they could. Nate didn’t want to make it about him so he had to ask them what they thought about his friends. Nate told his sisters that he had noticed all four of them getting close and he gave them his blessing that if more came out of their friendship with both men, they had it. His sisters did say both men had asked if it was okay to call and email them while they were away. However, Jeff and Adrian had also asked mom and dad’s permission first before asking them and so his sisters said they could.

A knock at the door interrupted their conversation. Two police detectives wanted to know if it was okay to speak with Nate regarding the night of Stacey’s death. These two men were not the friendliest and they had a suspicion of drug use and wanted to know if Nate had noticed Stacey acting weird. This started to piss Nate off and lead him to saying, “By chance detectives are you both implying that Stacey was at fault regarding the accident?” Which lead one of the detectives to respond, “Sir you need to calm down, we are here just to get the facts, but it seems like we have all the information we need, and we have no further questions for you at this time.” As they each left, Nate was fuming and this was the first time, I’ve ever seen him like this, but what did I expect. The love of his life was taken from him and these two police detectives were asking him if Stacey looked like she was on something, when clearly it was the other guys fault.
