“Shit.” The car made a wheezing attempt at turning over. She tried again. Click, click. Nothing. “Ohhhhh!” The sound was part pain, part exhaustion, part exasperation. The patrol car pulled back in beside her where it had just pulled out. Gant rolled down the passenger window and leaned across the front seat. “Won’t start?” “No,” she said weakly. Would she never be away from this chivalrous cop? “Battery?” She nodded. “Hop in, I’ll take you home.” He popped the door lock. “Perfect,” she muttered to herself. She stuffed all her belongings and herself into half of the bucket seat left on the passenger side, trying not to bump something official. “I swear I didn’t leave the lights on,” she thought out loud, apologizing. “No problem. I am, after all, a servant of the people.” H
