Chapter 3

1560 Words
Emily rushed with the staff as they took Dr. Brinks back for surgery. She waited with worry. She could not believe someone had been so angered as to shoot him. Her heart was breaking inside. She hated to tell Janet. But she was going to have to. And warn Janet to stay away from this man. She knew Janet and the baby would be in danger. It was clear Stan was going to plan on kidnapping the infant. Emily was going to do everything in her powers to stop that from happening. "Emily can you call Dr. Brinks emergency contact. Let his family know he was injured?" asks nurse Clara. "We are so understaffed right now. I can't do it" "Sure, sure give me the number. I wanted to stick around and see how Dr. Brinks is doing" Emily admits as she nods. Clara Masterson hands her the chart with the information on it. Emily did not work in this section of the hospital. It was the emergency section. It was always so busy. Packed full of people. Emily looks down at her nurses' outfit. She still had Dr. Brink's blood splattered on her uniform. She gulps. She would have to wash that when she got home. She wanders over the desk. Then calls a number. Dr. Brinks. Well another one. There were a few. So, Dr. Brinks came from a family of them? This one in the contacts was a Zander Brinks. He was a vet. Worked with animals. This man was Clinton's brother. She tried to call his cell phone that was listed after trying the other numbers and not getting an answer. Then she calls his vet office. "Hello? This is Dr. Brinks how may I help you? My secretary is off work because she just got married. Your business and call is important to us. Please leave your name, number and a message. We will get back with you as soon as we can" the machine answers. "s**t!!" sighs Emily. "Hello Dr. Brinks, you do not know me. I work for your brother here at the hospital. Clinton. He has been shot" she rambles on. She leaves the number. "I have been trying to reach his family. Please have someone call me. Or come here. Please call. Have a good day. My name is Emily Summers. I am a nurse here" ♥☆♥☆♥ She hangs up. Then about a few seconds later the phone rings. She answers it. "Emily?" someone asks. "This is her" she answers. "How is my brother? Why did he get shot?" demands a worried voice on the other end. "Is this Zander?" she asks. "Yes, this is he. I am Clinton's younger brother. One of the many of the Brinks brothers" he chuckles in a deep voice. "Oh, can you come up here? We need family to sign paper work. He is back in surgery right now" she informs him. "I will be right there" he replies. "I will be waiting" she tells him. They hang up. Well, she was learning so much about her boss. He came from a lengthy line of doctors in other fields. She was starting to wonder what his brother looked like. If he was a hard ass like his older brother. Or different with his office. She could not help but keep her worries off of Dr. Brinks for a bit. She was worried as she waited there to find out how surgery went for him. "Emily?" someone asks her. ♥☆♥☆♥ She feels someone touch her arm. She turns around. There was a handsome tall gentlemen standing before her. He looked so much like Dr. Brinks. They could be twins! She had to blink. She was going to be rude for staring at him. His hair was styled different from Dr. Brinks. It was longer. Styled back. He had a leather jacket on. He looked like a biker. Like he had a wild streak in him. They shake hands. His hand was firm and warm as they shook. He smiles as his chestnut brown eyes investigate hers. "Yes, you are Zander?" she asks. He nods. "The one and only. So, what happened tonight?" he demands to know. She stands there explaining to the whole story to Zander. He leans on the counter at the desk as he listens to her. She can't help noticing he had adorable dimples when he was smiling or serious. His eyes were focused on her. They did not stray when a pretty woman or nurse wandered past them like when Dr. Brinks was chatting with her. "That is awful. Did they catch this punk?" he wants to know. ♥☆♥☆♥ She shakes her head. "No, I am afraid they did not catch him" she says softly. "We have an update on Dr. Brinks" speaks up Clara as she joins them. "Zander! How nice to see you again" Clara happily gushes. Emily is moved out of the way as Clara hugs Zander hello. Another ladies man in the family it looked like. "How is my brother?" asks Zander. "Not a happy camper I am afraid" says Clara. "He woke up. You may go see him in the back room. He did fine in surgery. He only had a minor shot in the arm. Nothing to major. Is arm is going to be in a cast. He did break his arm when he fell after being shot though. The bone was damaged. It is bruised up" "Poor Clinton" gasps Emily in alarm. Zander and Clara look over at her. Her cheeks flame a blush. That was one of the first times she called him by his name. And did not address him as Dr. Brinks. "I mean too bad for Dr. Brinks. That is awful" she replies. Clara nods. "He will be in the cast for a few months. He has been requesting you Emily" says Clara. "Me? Why me?" she laughs. She shakes her head. "I don't know. He would not say" says Clara. "Go see him. He needs rest soon" warns Clara. Emily nods. "I will go back with you" offers Zander. Emily nods shyly. ♥☆♥☆♥ They head to the back room where Clinton rested. They follow Clara. Clinton looked so helpless as he lay his head back resting. Wearing those ugly awful hospital gowns. His arm was in a sling already. Emily felt a ping of empathy for her boss as he lay there helpless. She never saw him like this. Clara wanders to his side. Gently waking him. "Emily is here to see you and your brother" Clara informs him before wandering out of there. "So, bro looks like you got yourself in a mess?" asks Zander. "Who called him?" groans Clinton. "Missed you too brother" Zander chuckles. "I called him. Clara told me to call family" Emily speaks up shyly. "Of course, she did" snaps a frustrated Clinton "She just wanted a reason to see my little brother again" "I can't help it if I am the ladies' choice" jokes Zander. "What do you want Zander?" sighs Clinton. "I wanted to see if you are okay, do you need anything?" offers Zander. "What I need is for you to go away" demands Clinton. "He loves me. Do not let him fool you. I will be back little bro. I will get you a Woman's Day issue. I know how much you enjoy those" jokes Zander before leaving the room. "Hey how are you really?" Emily worries. Clinton tries to move his pillow propping it up. She helps him. Then pulls the blanket over him. "I feel like s**t!! " he mutters. "I bet. What did you want to see me for?" she asks. "Make sure Stan is no where near Janet or the baby. I never want to see that ass again! He will be arrested for what he did to me!" states an angered Clinton. She nods. "I will. I thought of that myself. I am worried for Janet" admits Emily. They sit in an awkward quietness. "I hate having Clara as my nurse" he mutters. "Why?" she asks him. "She dumped me for my brother a few years ago" he tells her. "Oh..." Emily was not sure what to say to that. "She said I was not boyfriend material. I was actually about to ask her to move in with me. Then I changed my mind, good thing I had" he remarks bitterly. "We are understaffed. Tomorrow, I want you working down here. They will admit me in a room in the morning. I requested you as my nurse" he tells her. She blinks. "But I never have worked with adults. Only babies. Kids" she worries. "You are a great nurse. Do not sell yourself short. I talked to Marlene. She said you can help me out tomorrow" he tells her. She sighs. "Fine" she agrees. "I will not be here long" he promises her. "I need someone I can trust in my care. I do not trust Clara as far as I can throw her" he grumbles. "I understand that" she tells him. "I am going to sleep now. The meds are kicking in. Goodnight Emily" he mutters as he lays back closing his eyes. His hair dangled in his face. She had a strong urge to brush it back. He lays there soon falling asleep. Looking so peaceful. Not like the normal go-getting Dr. Brinks. She reaches over not able to help herself. She brushes those bangs out of his eyes. "Much better" she says softly. He smiles in his sleep as he rests. She smiles back before heading home for the night. ♥☆♥☆♥☆♥☆♥☆♥☆♥♥☆
