CHAPTER 2 — The Stranger With the Same Eyes

441 Words
By morning, Asha convinced herself the strange feeling would fade, like a dream that slips away once sunlight touches it.   It didn’t.   The hallways buzzed with noise — lockers slamming, shoes squeaking, laughter bouncing off walls — but Asha heard none of it. Every sound felt muted beneath the memory of yesterday’s echo. She kept one hand lightly pressed to her chest, as if checking to make sure her heartbeat still belonged to her.   She moved through the corridor quietly, hugging her sketchbook to her side, trying not to draw attention. She never liked being looked at. Being invisible was easier.   But today, someone noticed her.   Not just anyone.   Him.   Lyon Hale walked through the opposite end of the hallway, surrounded by two friends talking loudly. He wasn’t listening to them. His eyes kept scanning the crowd, restless, searching for something he didn’t know how to describe.   He didn’t know he was searching for her.   Asha lowered her gaze the moment she saw him. People like Lyon didn’t look at people like her — confident, bright, loud, the kind of person the world made space for. She tucked her hair behind her ear and moved closer to the wall, hoping to slip past unnoticed.   But when she walked by him, the air shifted.   A small tug.   A quiet pull in her chest.   A whisper of emotion — not fear this time, but something sharp and curious.   Her breath hitched.   Lyon stopped walking.   The hallway noise blurred into background static as he turned his head, eyes narrowing slightly. He didn’t know her name. She didn’t know his. But for one strange second, it felt like their heartbeats recognized each other even if they didn’t.   Asha kept her eyes down and hurried away, steps quick, as if distance could protect her from whatever was happening.   But Lyon wasn’t done.   He stepped away from his friends, ignoring their confusion, and followed her with his gaze. He didn’t approach her — not yet — but something about her felt familiar in a way he couldn’t explain.   Then it happened again.   A sudden spark of emotion — surprise, nervousness — pulsing in his chest.   He froze.   She had just felt that.   He could tell.   Her shoulders tensed at the exact same moment.   Lyon exhaled sharply, almost laughing out of disbelief.   No way.   That wasn’t normal.   Asha slipped into her classroom and shut the door behind her, leaning against it with wide eyes. Her heart was racing, not from fear, but from recognition.   Because whatever she had felt yesterday…   She had just felt it again.   And this time, she wasn’t alone in the hallway when it happened.
