Chapter 2- Wolf Warnings

1100 Words
(Quinton's POV) I woke up this morning and my wolf kept telling me it was going to be a big day. I never quite know what those foreboding feelings are going to mean for me but it always causes me to be extra vigilant and on my toes. As the future Alpha of Silver Lightning Pack, I know I need to always be ready for whatever comes my way.  It's my first day of the last year of high school and I've just turned 18.  Normally, this would mean that I would take over the pack but Dad and I had decided it made more sense for him to lead for one more year and I would slowly start taking on more responsibility. I wouldn't fully take over until after high school was over.  I got dressed and headed downstairs where my Dad, Mom and Twin Sister were already having breakfast. Although we all often ate at the pack house, on special days like the first day of school, Mom made breakfast for just us.  I sat down and dished a huge helping. My twin sister, Blair was chattering away about how excited she was to be going back and I kind of felt the same. My Dad looked over at me and rolled his eyes a little bit so that Blair couldn't see. My Mom and Blair are both extroverts, they love people and could sit and chat for hours. My Dad and I are more alike and don't chat unless there is a point.  I looked around the table, feeling an overwhelming amount of love for my family. As  they chattered, my dad and I looked at their blonde heads angled together. Their food was forgotten and while they were totally absorbed in each other we both reached over at the same time and stole a piece of bacon.  My dad laughed as he pointed a piece of bacon at me and said pointedly, "enjoy your last year before it's all responsibility." I smiled and nodded.  Leading our pack for the last decade, had been less responsibility than years prior but that didn't mean that it wasn't still a lot of work. My Dad was constantly thinking about how to make life better for our people but he had also enjoyed the years that had been relatively calm. A little more than ten years ago the 5 packs in our area had fought hard for more power. One pack in particular, the ShadowFangs had wanted to take control over all the others. In the end we had come out on top and it had been their demise, but it had been a really tough time in our history.  My dad used his position on the Royal Council to try to make sure that nothing like that happened again, not just for our area, for all packs. There were already so few of us left, it didn't make sense for us to kill off our own kind. All of that senseless loss had forged an alliance between the four remaining local packs. SilverLightning had come together with ThunderRun, Black-Waters and the Rivers pack to put an end to ShadowFang and then we had made peace among us four. For the last few years that peace had meant that we were able to focus more on making a profit, recovering from the War and improving our pack. It had given us time to thrive and build and I hoped I could lead the pack as well as my father had, through War or Peace, my father had been a rock.  We were just finishing when the doorbell rang and Ashley and Jake strolled in.  Jake was my best friend and future Beta and Ashley was the girl I had been sleeping with all summer. I would say dating but it wasn't even that. Lately though, she has been driving me insane with her clinginess.  Now that I was 18, I knew that part of that was my wolf was ready for our mate and he was not a fan of Ashley or any other girl for that matter. He was ready for our mate. I kept trying to end it with her but she just wasn't really getting the hint. Each time I thought I ended it, but then we would somehow end up doing the naked dance again.  The struggle was real.  I made a silent vow to myself that by the end of the day she would fully understand that we were over. I was mid bite as they walked in and just seeing her had me completely losing my appetite. Yup, definitely time to end it for good.  My sister looked at me with some sympathy, rolled her forest green eyes because she thinks I'm handling the whole Ashley situation like a douche monkey. Those were actually her words verbatim last night.  Blair was born to be our pack healer. She was kind, caring and had an uncanny knack to cut through bull s**t, it shocked no one when she chose her vocation. She was incredibly driven to do the best as our next healer and I was really proud of how hard she worked.  I also loved that she saved me by asking Ashley to help her choose something to wear.  It was evident to anyone looking at us that my sister and I were twins. Our matching green eyes, blonde hair and the dimples that appeared when we smiled lent us a similarity. But regardless of our similar features she looked completely feminine and if I do say so myself I rocked a chiseled masculine look. Our twin bond also gave us a unnatural ability to understand each other and right now without saying anything, her smirk was telling me to figure my s**t out.  One of my favourite things about Blair was although she was beautiful she really didn't care to fuss about herself so as Ashley squealed and gave her a hug,  I felt my sister laugh through her pack link, and say  "Ugh, you know I  don't give a s**t about what I wear today, you owe me one and need to deal with this".  I breathed a sigh of relief, as they got up to go look at clothes. I looked at Jake who laughed and reading my mind said, "let's get out of here before they're back."  I gave my Mom and Dad a kiss through their smirks, shooting them both a dirty look for getting enjoyment out of my issues. Then Jake and I booked it to my jeep.
