( Kenzie's POV)
I headed to bed dreading the coming day. I had enough paperwork and pack responsibilities without having to spend the day at school. I also wasn't looking forward to having to prove myself again. Knowing how werewolves were, I knew that walking into the school, I would have to assert my power in some way and it wasn't my favourite thing to do.
Because of the peace treaty between our packs, things had been rather calm for some time. I had taken power while ago but I knew there was a lot of talk about Thunder Run and Jon had prepared us for the fact that it was a matter of time before outside packs started to try to push their way in.
Jon felt we would be the first pack to have any sign of trouble with Rogues or Challenges because there was so much chatter about me leading. I could imagine because in the first year of me taking my place as Alpha, I had to really prove myself even to my own Pack.
The first year it had been more whispers and rumblings, but I had stood my ground, and over and over again showed through training, commitment and confidence that I deserved my role.
The day we announced Izzy as my future Beta, it all came to a head and I had to put down one of my advisors. He had been my Dad's third, Michael Brooks.
He had foolishly assumed that since Jon only had a daughter, that his son Callum would be my Beta. They were training and Izzy finally beat Callum in a fight. We chose then to call a meeting and announce Izzy as my beta.
Michael stood up when Izzy's name was announced and started berating me, I cooly told him to calm the f**k down and sit down and he came at me. We fought to the death, and it was a battle against him but also was a battle for everyone's support.
When it was done and he was lying dead at my feet, I gave Callum and his mom Linda a 5 minute window to get their s**t and get out. I couldn't handle the constant reminder of Michael and everything that he stood for and my gut said that keeping them around would be bad news.
I would have forever been questioning their loyalty.
Although killing a pack member was one of the worst things I had ever had to do, it had been beneficial to me as a leader.
It actually seemed to cement my role and the whispers and rumblings dissipated, replaced with respect and faith that I would do what needed to be done for our pack.
(Izzy's POV)
There were 5 of us from Thunder Run heading to Moon light high. I grabbed a couple bagels as I ran through my kitchen and tossed one to Kenzie as she came out of her house.
She lived with my family until she turned 15 and we miss having her with us but the Alpha of a pack needs to have their own space and our pack needed to stop viewing her as a youth and start seeing her as their leader.
Moving into the big empty house that she grew up in, couldn't have been easy but she never complained. I did know that she didn't bother to make herself food very often though and so I was constantly grabbing food and shoving it at her. She exuded confidence today in black skinny jeans with rips in the knees, converse shoes and a white v neck t shirt and leather jacket. Her curly dark hair bounced as she caught her bagel and she said thanks around a bite.
The 3 other pack members coming with us were Ty, Sean and Mel. We had been raised together, homeschooled together and were all pretty tight. Ty was Kenzie's third. Sean was Ty's best friend and Sean's twin sister Mel was training to be our pack healer.
They were all leaning against Ty's truck waiting. We had decided that we'd all drive together for day 1, stick together because we didn't really know what we were in for. Sean, who never stops eating gazed longingly at my bagel and I laughed knowing that he probably had already had two breakfasts today. As werewolves we need to constantly fuel our bodies. Ty put on some arkells and we were on our way.
(Kenzie's POV)
The thing about me, is I'm quick to anger but also quick to calm down and recognize good solid logic. With a good night's sleep and the time to process Izzy and her reasoning, I was onboard with this plan and although I knew I was going to have to prove myself. I had kind of worked myself around to the fact that I love a challenge and I love exceeding people's expectations.
I was even a little excited for whatever this experience might bring. I have so much on my plate all the time that I've never really been able to be a kid and maybe heading to Moon Light would give me a chance to have some fun. As the 5 of us drove, I happily munched my bagel and listened to my 4 friends around me.
As we pulled into the parking lot and got out, I felt A LOT of eyes on us. I stared right back at people and walked in with my head high. As I walked through the door, I banged into a barely clothed girl sucking face with some huge Uber attractive guy.
They both turned around and I knew right away that he was an Alpha too. He was super out of breath and seemed to be gasping for air... I couldn't help but stare a little, he was crazy hot but also was he okay? The girl on the other hand got right in my face and pushed me, "watch where you're going and stop staring at my man" she said in what I was assuming she thought was a dominant tone.
Any werewolf close enough to smell me, would automatically be able to smell my authority and recognize me as a leader. I knew right away that her boyfriend was an Alpha and her lack of respect pissed me off more than I could say. I reached out and although she was a little taller than me, I picked her up by the throat and tossed her against the lockers. I could feel Izzy and Ty reach for me but I shook them off and walked over and using my eyes to hold her in place, calmly said "know your place and watch. Who. The. f**k. You. Are. Talking. to".
I walked back towards the tall dark Alpha god she'd seemed to belong to and with a smirk said "teach your god damned pack some respect." I took one last breath, because he smelled absolutely divine and I couldn't seem to help myself. Then I turned with my packmates and walked towards the office. I could hear her whining to him but I ignored the chatter as the door shut behind me.
(Quinton's POV)
Jake and I were standing at the front doors to the high school catching up with a couple of other guys from the football team when I smelled something unreal, I looked around trying to find the sweet hint of vanilla when Ashley jumped into my arms.
I lost the scent, heard her whine about wanting to come together for the first day of school and then all of a sudden she had her tongue down my throat. I could hear Jake laughing and was building up to a boil when someone knocked into us, Ashley peeled herself off me and I completely lost my breath.
I again breathed in the delicious vanilla and found myself staring at the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. I recognized her as an Alpha immediately. Which meant she had to be MacKenzie Thunder the current female Alpha of ThunderRun and apparently my mate?
I was so entranced that I didn't even hear Ashley until she was already pushing her and I reached out to toss her out of the way, no one puts hands on my mate when I watched MacKenzie pick Ashley up by the throat and toss her like she weighed nothing into the lockers.
I looked around to make sure no authority figures were watching and heard her packmates trying to stop her from tearing Ashley apart. She shook them off easily and walked over, seemingly calm and said something quietly to Ashley. Ashley's eyes got really big, she's not much of a fighter so I was surprised she'd even pushed someone. It made me feel even shittier for letting this go on so long, obviously she was attached to me, in a way that I did not return.
Mackenzie stood up straight and turned around looking for someone. As she walked back towards me, I realized she had been looking for me. Her gaze stayed locked on mine as she walked back towards me with a confident smirk on her face.
Her voice was slightly raspy as she growled out, "teach your god damned pack some respect" then she turned around and walked towards the office. I heard Jake whistle out slowly and looked over to see him practically drooling as she walked away. "Mine" I growled as I pondered how to actually make her mine because she seemed to have no idea that I was her mate.
