Chapter 23 Shadows of betrayal

1019 Words
Victor spread the documents across his desk, the dim light of his study casting long shadows over the aged papers. The files Sophia had risked her life to deliver were more than just papers—they were a map to a conspiracy decades in the making. At the center of it all: Rafael "Don" Rican. The documents revealed a web of connections that went far deeper than anyone had suspected. Matteo Moretti—Victor's father—had been involved in a complex negotiation with Rican years ago. Not just a simple business arrangement, but something more sinister. A land deal. But not just any land. A strategic piece of property that controlled shipping routes between Italy and the Mediterranean. Worth millions. Worth killing for. Victor's fingers traced the marginalia in his father's handwriting. Notes about "insurance," about "keeping the family safe." Between the lines, a darker truth emerged. Matteo had been planning something—a move that would have cut Rican out of a lucrative operation. And then Matteo died. Suddenly. Mysteriously. The files suggested that Marco De Luca—Sophia's father—had known something. He'd been Matteo's confidant, the one person who understood the full scope of the plan. And now both men were dead. As for Sophia's murder? The evidence pointed to a direct order from Don Rican himself. But why now? Why after all these years? Alana. Victor's gaze drifted to the other room, where she was currently staying. Rican's niece. The woman he was supposed to marry. She was connected to this somehow—a piece of a puzzle he was desperate to solve. The real question wasn't who ordered Sophia's hit. It was what truth was so dangerous that two powerful families would risk everything to keep it hidden. Victor pulled out his phone. Time to have a conversation with Enzo—his uncle, the only family member he truly trusted. The consequences of Sophia's death were just beginning to unfold. And Don Rican had no idea what was coming. # Calculated Moves Enzo arrived within the hour, his weathered face a map of carefully concealed emotions. Victor watched his uncle, noting the way Enzo's eyes darted to the spread of documents before settling back on him. "You've found something," Enzo stated. It wasn't a question. Victor slid a specific document across the desk. "The shipping routes. Dad was planning to cut Rican out completely. But something went wrong." Enzo's hand trembled slightly as he picked up the document. Years of practiced composure couldn't hide the flicker of recognition in his eyes. "Who else knows?" Enzo asked, his voice low. "Sophia knew," Victor said, the past tense hanging heavy between them. "Before Rico killed her. Now, only we know." In the adjacent room, Alana remained silent. Victor knew she was listening. She always listened. Enzo leaned back, years of strategy playing across his features. "Rican doesn't know you have these documents. That gives us an advantage." "An advantage for what?" Victor's question was sharp, direct. A moment passed. Then Enzo spoke the words that would change everything. "We're going to make Rican believe we know nothing. And then we'll destroy him." # Double Edged Night had fallen by the time Enzo left, their plan meticulously constructed. Victor stood at the window, watching his uncle's car disappear into the darkness. The weight of Matteo's legacy pressed down on him, heavier now with the knowledge of what his father had been trying to accomplish. A soft creak of floorboards alerted him. "Eavesdropping doesn't suit you, Alana," Victor said without turning. Alana stepped fully into the room, her composure unruffled. "I prefer to think of it as staying informed." She moved like a panther, her designer dress a stark contrast to the danger she represented. When she reached the desk, her gaze lingered on the now-empty surface where the documents had been. "Looking for something?" Victor asked, turning to face her. Alana's smile was slow, calculated. "Just wondering what was so important that Sophia De Luca had to die for it." The directness of her statement confirmed what Victor had suspected. She knew about the hit. Perhaps she'd even been involved. "You know," he said, "I've been wondering why my father would arrange for me to marry into the Rican family. It seemed... convenient." "Business is business," Alana replied, tracing her finger along the edge of his desk. "Marriages have sealed alliances for centuries." Victor approached her, studying her face for any flicker of truth. "And what alliance was my father hoping to secure with yours?" Her eyes held his, unflinching. "Protection, perhaps? Or maybe insurance." "Against what?" Alana leaned closer. "You have the files, Victor. You tell me." The tension between them was palpable—a dangerous dance of attraction and suspicion. Victor knew she was playing him, knew she reported back to her uncle. But knowledge was power, and keeping her close meant controlling what information flowed back to Rican. "Your uncle had Sophia killed," Victor stated, watching for her reaction. Alana didn't flinch. "People die in our world every day, Victor. You know that better than most." He reached out, his fingers grazing her cheek in a gesture that could have been affection or threat. "Does he know I have the files?" Something flickered in her eyes—uncertainty, perhaps. Or fear. "Not yet." Victor let his hand fall away. "Then we still have time." Alana's expression hardened. "Time for what?" "To decide whose side you're really on." She laughed, the sound both musical and cold. "I'm on my own side, Victor. Same as you." With that, she turned and left, her perfume lingering in the air like a warning. Victor waited until her footsteps faded before reaching for his phone. He dialed a secure number—one not even Enzo knew about. "Lyon," he said when his cousin answered. "I need you to do something for me." Because if there was one thing Victor had learned from his father's death, it was that family couldn't always be trusted. And sometimes, the most dangerous players were the ones sleeping under your own roof.
