For one horrible moment, I thought about my dad, the jerk who ditched us so long ago I couldn’t really remember his face without using a picture. If he were here, I started, but I knew that there was no truth in it. There wasn’t anybody left in this apartment but the two of us, and only one of us was really talking. As much as I had avoided my mother, now part of me wished that she’d learn to barge in and make me talk. CHAPTER FIVE Cassandra was waiting for me in the breezeway at lunch.
