I knocked on Anila’s office door. When I entered, I found her buried under piles of paperwork. I placed the report in front of her. Her pen scratched calmly across the page as she signed. At that moment, the quiet of the room shattered with the shaky sound of the door opening.
A guard rushed in, her breath racing, and said,
“Ma’am, the inmate Mira Ashford has been taken to the couples visit room. She will enter the room with her partner in seconds. She has been informed of all the instructions.”
The air froze in my lungs. A sharp ringing hit my ears. A sudden cold ran through my fingertips, then turned into molten fire boiling under my skin.
