POV ADRIÁN The phone rings at six in the morning, pulling me out of a restless sleep filled with fragments of unfinished conversations with Lola. I answer without looking at the screen, assuming it’s some corporate emergency. “Hello?” “Adrián, darling. I just landed in Milan.” I sit up abruptly in bed, fully awake. “Mom? What are you doing in Milan?” “What do you think I’m doing?” Helena Valcor says, in that tone that makes the question sound ridiculous. “I came to meet my grandchildren.” My blood turns to ice. “How did you—?” “How did I find out?
