The First Light

Chapter Six The words carved above the ancient entrance refused to leave my mind. THE FIRST LIGHT REMEMBERS. I stood before the stone doorway, staring at the crescent symbol and the three claw marks beneath it. My Moon Seal was burning against my skin. Not painfully. It felt more like a warning. Or perhaps an invitation. Elder Rowan stepped beside me. “We should be careful.” I looked at him. “You said the temple was beyond the mountains.” “It is.” “Then what is this place?” He examined the carvings. “An old shrine, perhaps.” “Perhaps?” Rowan sighed. “I have never seen this place before.” That surprised me. “You've traveled these mountains?” “Years ago.” “And you never found it?” “No.” I looked at the entrance again. “Then why did the Moon lead us here?” “I don't know.” The answer frustrated me. But somehow, I felt that I was beginning to understand something. The Moon Seal was not giving me complete answers. It was showing me where to look. I placed my hand against the stone. The entire doorway glowed. Kael stepped backward. “What is happening?” I didn't know. Silver light spread from beneath my palm and traveled across the wall. The markings began to shine. Then the stone door moved. Slowly. Silently. A cold breeze came from inside. Darkness waited beyond the entrance. Daren looked at Rowan. “Do we really want to enter?” Rowan stared into the shrine. “We came this far.” I stepped inside. The others followed. The passage was narrow at first. Ancient symbols covered the walls. Some showed wolves. Others showed women standing beneath the moon. And everywhere I looked, I saw the crescent symbol. We walked deeper. The air smelled old and earthy. Our footsteps echoed. After several minutes, the passage opened into a large chamber. At its center stood a circular stone platform. Above it was a hole in the ceiling. Moonlight entered through the opening and fell directly onto the platform. I walked toward it. Something inside me pulled me forward. Rowan grabbed my arm. “Wait.” I stopped. “What?” “Look.” He pointed at the floor. There were markings around the platform. Three circles. Each contained a different symbol. The first was a crescent. The second was a wolf. The third was a crown. My heart began beating faster. “The Moon Seal,” I whispered. Rowan nodded. “This place was built for someone like you.” I stepped onto the platform. The room changed. The moonlight became brighter. The three symbols began glowing. Then a voice filled the chamber. Not my mother's. Something older. Something that seemed to come from the walls themselves. “Who walks beneath the First Light?” I froze. Rowan looked around. No one answered. The voice came again. “Who carries the awakened seal?” I looked down at my wrist. “I do.” The room became silent. Then: “Why have you come?” I swallowed. “To find my mother.” The light surrounding the platform intensified. “Why else?” I thought about it. “To find the truth.” The chamber remained silent. I continued. “And to understand who I am.” The silver light suddenly spread across the floor. The crown symbol became brighter. Then a figure appeared in the moonlight. A woman. She wore a long silver cloak. Her hair seemed to shimmer like moonlight. I knew immediately who she was. “Lyra.” The ancient Moon Guardian looked at me. Her eyes were silver. “You carry the blood of those who served the Moon.” “Am I a Moon Guardian?” Lyra smiled faintly. “You are more than a guardian.” I felt my heart pound. “What am I?” “You are the final heir of the Moon Line.” Rowan stepped forward. “The Moon Line?” Lyra looked toward him. “You know the old stories.” “Only fragments.” “Then listen carefully.” The chamber became completely silent. “The Moon Line existed long before Silverfang was founded. Its guardians protected the balance between wolves, nature, and the ancient power of the Moon.” I listened carefully. “For generations, the bloodline remained hidden.” “Why?” I asked. “Because power attracts those who desire control.” I immediately thought of the unknown people following us. “What happened to the previous guardian?” Lyra's expression changed. “She was betrayed.” My breath caught. “My mother?” Lyra looked at me. “Your mother carried the blood of the Moon Line.” I closed my eyes. Everything suddenly connected. The pendant. The letter. The Moon Seal. The wolf. The crown. My mother had known. She had always known. “Where is she?” I asked. Lyra did not answer immediately. “She went north.” “I know.” “She was searching for the Moon Crown.” “I know that too.” “Then you know why she was followed.” I shook my head. “No.” Lyra looked at the crown symbol on the floor. “The crown is not merely an ancient relic. It is a key.” “A key to what?” “The Moon Gate.” Rowan stepped forward. “What is the Moon Gate?” Lyra looked at him. “A doorway between the mortal world and the ancient realm of the Moon.” I stared at her. “Does it still exist?” “Yes.” “Where?” “Beyond the Temple of First Light.” My mother's words returned to me. The temple is only the beginning. I finally understood. She had not meant the journey ended at the temple. She meant it began there. “Why does someone want the crown?” “Because whoever opens the Moon Gate can call upon an ancient power.” “What kind of power?” “The kind that should never belong to one person.” A chill moved through me. “Who is searching for it?” Lyra's expression became serious. “Those who have been waiting for the Moon Line to awaken.” “Who?” “The answer lies with the person you fear.” My heart sank. “Morwen.” Lyra said nothing. “Is she the one?” “She is part of the truth.” I frowned. “What does that mean?” Before Lyra could answer, the chamber shook. Dust fell from the ceiling. Kael reached for his weapon. “What was that?” A loud sound came from outside. Then another. Someone was approaching. Rowan turned toward the entrance. “We're not alone.” The silver light around Lyra began to fade. “Wait!” I shouted. She looked at me. “Your mother left you a path.” “The key?” Lyra nodded. “The silver key will open what she could not.” “What does that mean?” “You will know when the time comes.” The vision disappeared. The chamber fell into darkness. For several seconds, nobody moved. Then footsteps echoed from the passage. Daren whispered, “They're here.” We hurried toward the entrance. Rowan motioned for everyone to stay quiet. We reached the outer chamber. Voices could be heard beyond the doorway. I recognized none of them. Kael looked at Rowan. “There are at least three.” “Maybe more,” Daren said. Rowan looked at me. “We need another way out.” I looked around. The walls. The symbols. The moonlight. Then I noticed something. The crescent symbol on the floor was glowing. I walked toward it. “Here.” I placed my hand over it. Nothing happened. I remembered the words on the wooden disk. When the Moon calls, follow the light. I looked upward. A thin beam of moonlight entered through the ceiling. I moved the wooden disk into the light. The disk began glowing. A hidden line appeared across the floor. It led toward the wall. I followed it. There was a small stone door hidden beneath the markings. I took out the silver key. It fit perfectly. I turned it. The stone door opened. Behind it was a narrow passage. Rowan stared. “Your mother knew about this.” “Yes.” “Then she expected you to find it.” We entered. The door closed behind us. For several minutes, we walked in darkness. Eventually, a faint light appeared ahead. We followed it. The passage opened onto the side of the mountain. Cold air rushed against my face. Below us stretched a vast valley. The moon illuminated the landscape. We had escaped. But the people at the shrine had not seen us leave. Kael looked down toward the valley. “Where do we go now?” I looked at the map. The Temple of First Light was beyond the mountains. “We continue north.” Rowan nodded. We started walking. But I couldn't stop thinking about Lyra's final words. The answer lies with the person you fear. Morwen. What had she been hiding? Why had she feared my mother? And what did she know about the Moon Crown? We traveled through the night until we reached another clearing. Everyone rested. I sat away from the others, holding my mother's pendant. Then I noticed something. The pendant had opened. I had never seen it do that before. Inside was a tiny piece of paper. My hands trembled as I unfolded it. There was only a short message. Elara, if you are reading this, the Moon has already chosen you. Do not return to Silverfang until you understand why I left. The person who betrayed me may still be there. I stared at the words. My mother had known. She had known that someone close to her had betrayed her. And she had warned me not to return. A cold feeling settled inside me. Silverfang was no longer simply my home. It might be the place where everything had begun. I folded the message and placed it safely inside my bag. Then I looked toward the mountains. The Temple of First Light was still ahead. The truth about my mother was ahead. And somewhere in the darkness, the people searching for the Moon Crown were still following us. I didn't know what awaited me beyond the mountains. But I knew one thing. I would not turn back. Not now. Not when I was finally beginning to understand who I was. Next chapter>>
