It was late, the sun just a couple of hours away from cresting the pali cliffs at dawn, when Kalei circled back to the house. Earlier in the evening, Kahana and ‘Ilima had stood in the yard talking story with the people who lived there. Even to Kalei’s eyes there had been something odd about the gathering: lots of banging up and down the steps, in and out of the house, and most of the attention focused on a mud-covered boy.
‘Ilima and Kahana knew I was there, Kalei thought, and so did the boy covered in mud, but how?
He ran his tongue along his too many teeth.
This needed looking into.
