12 Land Surfing Pupule Insane; reckless; wild; crazy. When I finally stood at the top of the mudslide, breathless and holding a bunch of ti leaves between my legs, it occurred to me that maybe Uncle Kahana was a little pupule. He didn’t have a job and walked around in hammajang shorts and a ratty t-shirt all the time, unless it was a dress-up occasion like a baby lu‘au. Then he’d bust out spotless white trousers and a freshly ironed aloha shirt that made him look like a parking valet or musician for an upscale Waikiki hotel. Where these clothes disappeared to in between weddings and graduation parties, I had no idea. Uncle Kahana spent his mornings at the beach, fishing or just watching the waves. He talked to ‘Ilima like she was a person, not so odd, perhaps, except he talked to her
