37 Brothers Futless A condition of boredom, confusion, or frustration; an inability to move forward. It was no use. I flung the papers off my bed, futless. These were the fourth set of images I’d drawn for the mural and nothing was working. Mr. Halpert had taken one look at the first two sets and said that while he liked taro patches, canoes, and rainbows, he thought it a little passé. When I asked, Mom told me later that passé meant Mr. Halpert wanted something more original. I was out of ideas and time.
