Chapter 16 “Knock knock,” Mason said, her heart pounding in her chest as she stepped into Cameron’s house, unsure whether the open-door policy for her still applied. It was unusually quiet, and each sound she made echoed, from the click of the door, to her sandals on the tile, to the tick of the clock, which was more ornamental than practical, on the wall of the great room in the extremely neat house. She thought she heard something coming from Cameron’s office down the hall, a squeak of his chair, maybe, and then footsteps, and she froze where she was, halfway across the floor, taking in Cameron, barefoot in blue jeans and a simple white T-shirt, and he hadn’t shaved.
