Later that evening, I heard my brothers come back. They were making a lot of noise in the kitchen, banging cupboard doors, throwing things around, talking, and laughing. This went on for a while until I heard the front door slam. Then they were gone again.
Realising my mouth was dry, I slowly sat up and dried my eyes. I went out into the hallway and tiptoed down the stairs, not wanting Father to hear me. As I got to the bottom of the stairs, I heard snoring coming from the living room. Realising that meant Father was comatose on the sofa again, I walked into the kitchen and saw that my brothers had left it a mess. After getting a glass of water, I cleaned up the mess so my Father wouldn’t see it and blame me, then went back out to the hallway.
I stood in the hallway for a moment and looked towards the front door, imagining what it’s like outside, dreaming of escaping this nightmare. A dream I’ve had every night for as long as I can remember, but the door is kept locked all the time, and I’m the only one who doesn’t have a key. As I stand there staring at the door, I hear Father’s continued snoring, and something inside my head tells me to open the living room door. Terrified, I tell myself it’s too risky; he might wake up, but the voice assures me it’ll be okay.
I step towards the door and slowly turn the handle. The door squeaks slightly as it opens, and I freeze. After a moment, the snoring continues, so I push the door a little more and step inside, where I see Father lying on his front, his feet hanging over the sofa arm, his arm hanging over onto the floor, and his head turned to the side towards the tv. There are empty beer bottles all over the coffee table and floor. Then I realise there’s something else on the table. I slowly and quietly walk a few steps closer and realise it’s the keys. In his drunken state, he got careless and left them out.
That voice comes back telling me to take them and get out of there while I can, but in a moment of realisation, I start to question where I would go? How would I survive? What if life out there is just as bad or worse? “It’s not, trust me, you will be safe out there. I will guide you, and nobody will hurt you again,” says the voice. “Who are you?” I ask. “How are you inside?” I ask in my head? “Just go now before it’s too late, and we can talk later,” she says.
I take a deep breath and, shaking, I step towards the coffee table. I take a look at my father, who is still sleeping, and quietly pick up the keys. Then, I take a few steps backwards and head for the door. Slowly and quietly, I step out into the hallway and close the living room door. With my father still snoring, I step towards the front door, slowly slide the key into the lock, and turn it.
As I hear the lock click open, I feel a strange mix of emotions, including nerves, fear, excitement, and uncertainty. “It’s okay, don’t be afraid. I will never leave you,” says the voice. I don’t understand why, but the voice is oddly comforting, so I turn the handle and open the door, then step out onto the doorstep. Feeling the fresh air on my face for the first time, I take a deep breath in. It feels so good. I take a few more steps, then a few more until I’m standing on the pavement. Taking a moment to look around, I don’t see much because it’s dark, but I notice there’s no one around. There are a few houses to either side of me, some woods on the opposite side of the road, and there are lots of stars and a nearly full moon in the sky.
Hearing distant voices to my left, I quickly ran across the road into the woods and hid behind a tree to look out. As two male figures started to appear, I realised it was my brothers, and remembering I left the front door and my bedroom door open, I knew they would quickly discover I had escaped and come looking for me. So I quickly and quietly crept further into the woods. It was pitch black in the woods, not even moonlight to see by. I heard distant shouts from behind me and knew that meant they were looking for me, so needing to get as far away from them as possible, I started walking faster, wishing I could see where I was going. “Don’t worry, I’ve got you” came the voice, then my senses started to heighten and I could both see and hear better.
Now able to see, I began to run through the woods, getting faster and faster. After a while, I realised I couldn’t hear the shouts anymore, so I slowed back to a walk. A little while later, I noticed some small mountains to the right. Walking over to them, I realised there was a cave opening, so I slipped inside and sat there needing somewhere to hide until morning.
I sat there until daylight, too terrified to sleep in case someone found me.
There were various creepy noises coming from the woods through the night, and with every rustling leaf and snapping twig, I panicked. “It’s okay, it’s just the wildlife” came that voice again. Who are you? I asked. “I am Celestia, your wolf”. My what? I asked, shocked. “Your wolf, we are werewolves”.
I sat there for a moment in shocked silence, then said in my mind, no way, werewolves aren’t real! “Oh yes, we are very real. We should have had our first shift the first full moon after your 16th birthday, but the malnutrition and confinement you have suffered meant you were too weak. All I could do was sit to the back of your mind and try to keep you alive until the time was right to help you escape”.
“I understand this is a shock for you after the childhood you’ve had. Werewolves are usually raised knowing what they are and seeing the older pack members shift. They are taught from being babies what it means to be a werewolf, so they are fully prepared for their first shift. If you think back through your life, it will explain things you may not have realised were unusual, like how fast and strong Father, LJ, and Lucian are, how tall and well-built they are, how they never seem to get sick, and how much they eat. All of this comes from their wolf genes.”
So if I’m a werewolf, why do I not have any of that? “The malnutrition and confinement have stunted your growth and left you weak. It affected your healing ability, but don’t worry, you will get stronger now.”
Oh no, someone’s coming! “Yes, I can hear them. Don’t worry, it’s dark in here. Just stay very quiet, and they won’t find us.”
I sit there quietly and listen. I can hear them getting closer, the crunching leaves and twigs getting louder. Then I hear voices. “I knew Dad’s drinking would end up causing problems. How could he be stupid enough to leave the keys out?” Says LJ. “He probably didn’t realise the stupid b***h knew how to use them.” Lucian replies, “When we find that f*****g slut, she is in for a world of pain. Look over there, Lucian. There’s a cave. Let’s check it out.”
