Chapter 3 - Coma

I had been pacing the corridor for what felt like hours when Dr Harland came out. “Doctor, how is she? Will she be ok?”, “She’s very weak, dehydrated, and extremely malnourished. The nurses are cleaning her up now and changing her into a gown. Once they are finished, they will draw some blood and take her for X-rays. I will then be able to better assess and treat her injuries. She will also be put on a drip to get fluids and nutrients into her. May I ask who she is, Alpha? We don’t have a name or medical background for her.” “She is your Luna. Unfortunately, that is all I know. She was like this when I found her.” “Ok Alpha, Alpha. I will keep you informed on her condition. Once the nurses have finished and she is comfortable, you will be able to sit with her.” “Thank you, Doctor.” I sat down and called Kyle for an update. “Hello,” “Kyle, do you have an update for me yet?” No, not yet. I have checked the national and international missing persons databases, but there is nobody matching her description. I also have a team contacting every pack within 50 miles of where we found her, but nothing so far with just her description to go by. It might help if we had a photo we could email around.” “ok I will take one once the doctor and nurses have finished with her. Keep me informed in the meantime.” “Will do, Alpha.” I hung up and continued waiting. After a while, I see the nurses wheel her out. Now the dirt is gone, I can see how pale her skin is, her arms are stick-thin, bruised, and her face is thin and has no colour to it except for bruises. Her lips are thin, dry, and cracked, and she has a scar going from her forehead through her right eyebrow and another going across her chin. As the nurses wheel her off towards the X-ray room, Trixie, a young nurse still in training, comes out carrying her clothes. “ Alpha, what would you like me to do with these?” I look at them for a moment and wonder if they could provide a clue about who she is or where she came from. “Here, I will take them,” I say as I take the clothes. “Is this everything?” I ask. “Yes, Alpha, she had no underwear or footwear and nothing in her pockets.” “Ok thank you, Trixie.” I sit down and start looking over the clothes. I start with the T-shirt. It is black with a picture of a heavy metal band on the front. I look at the label and see that it’s a boy’s size 16 years. I see it has a faded name on it. I can make out the letters LU—AN. I sniff the T-shirt, but the only scents I get are my Luna and dirt. Next, I look at the jogging bottoms. They are plain black, also for a teenage boy, but these only have 2 letters: L and J. I call Kyle and give him this information in the hope it might help. Then, I call Sophia, my Beta female and Kyle’s mate, and tell her to come to the hospital. Then, I call my mother, Grace, and tell her what has happened. Within a few minutes, my mum and dad arrive at the hospital. “Oh, honey,” my mum says as she hugs me. “She is in good hands here,” my dad, Hugo, says. “I’m sure she will be ok. As we are talking, Sofia arrives with Leah, my Gamma female, and Louis’s mate. Both asking, “What’s wrong, Alpha? Why are you at the hospital?” I fill them in on everything that has happened and tell them that she is going to need clothes, underwear, shoes, toiletries, the full works. “Yes, Alpha, what are her sizes?” asks Sofia. Just then, the nurses start wheeling her back to her room, and I hear everyone gasp in shock as they see her. Martha tells me they are about to set up the drip, then I will be able to go in. “Oh my goddess, the poor girl,” I hear my mother say. “She’s so thin,” says Leah. “Yes, she is,” I reply. “And when I get my hands on those responsible for this, they’re dead,” I say. A few moments later, the nurses come out, and Martha says, “You can go in now. Doctor Harland is looking over the X-rays and waiting for the blood test results, which he has put a rush on. Then, he will be through to talk with you.” “ok, thank you, Martha.” We all go into the room and see her delicate frame lie on the bed connected to the drip, a catheter and an ECG machine monitoring her heart rate. I immediately go over to the bed and take her little hand in mine. As I look her over, I notice she has a crooked finger, bruises covering everywhere I can see, and scars old and new on her arms as well. “Why hasn’t her wolf been healing her?” I ask. “When the body is too weak, it can make the wolf weak as well,” my dad says. I take a photo of her and send it to Kyle, then sit down on the bedside chair and continue holding her hand. Mum, Sofia, and Leah leave to fetch some things for my Luna, and my dad goes to find more chairs and a put-up bed for me to use. A little later, with my dad and I sat either side of the bed, the doctor comes in and says, “I have the results, Alpha. The blood test shows she is very anaemic and has very low levels of all nutrients, especially vitamin D, the X-Rays show that she has had multiple broken bones over the years, none of which look like they have been treated. Some of these will need to be reset when she is strong enough for the surgery.” “How long will that be, doctor? When will she wake up?” “It’s impossible to say at the moment. We will be giving her strong doses of iron, vitamin D, and calcium and a boost of vitamin K daily until her levels are back to normal. She will also be on antibiotics for a kidney infection for the next week. Then all we can do is monitor her and wait.” “ok thank you, doctor.” My mum comes back first. She has flowers that she sets about putting in a vase, then sits them on the over-bed table. She then hands me a duffel bag and says, “I knew you’re not going to want to leave her side, so I grabbed you some clothes and toiletries.” “Thanks, Mum.” She then opens the other bag she has and hands me a container that I see she has filled with sandwiches, fruit and veggies, and crisps, then hands me a couple of bottles of water. Continuing to empty the bag, I see she has some things for my Luna - a hairbrush, detangling spray, a toothbrush, face and body wipes, and fluffy socks. Mum picks up the hairbrush and spray, then says, “Now let’s see what I can do about those knots in her hair.” Then sets about spraying and brushing. By the time she is finished, my Luna’s hair looks lovely and smooth.
