The first rays of dawn spread across Dragon Mountain (**), casting a golden glow over the ancient halls of the Hidden Dragon Clan. A cold breeze swept through the courtyard where Li Chen stood alone, the Dragon Soul Sword (***) resting across his palms.
Since the Shadow Alliance had revealed its presence, the atmosphere within the clan had changed. Guards patrolled every entrance, while elders held meetings deep into the night.
Li Chen knew one thing with certainty.
The peace he had enjoyed for the past three years was over.
Elder Long approached quietly, carrying a wooden box sealed with a golden dragon emblem.
"Young Master," he said, "today you must undergo the Hidden Trial."
Li Chen frowned.
"What trial?"
"The Dragon Emperor Ring has accepted you, but acceptance alone does not make one worthy of leading the clan. Every Dragon Emperor must prove his heart before he can inherit the full power of the bloodline."
Li Chen nodded.
"I'm ready."
Elder Long smiled faintly.
"I hope so."
They walked to the deepest chamber beneath Dragon Mountain. Massive stone doors opened slowly, revealing a circular hall surrounded by ancient dragon statues.
At its center floated a crystal sphere filled with swirling golden mist.
"This is the Dragon Heart Mirror (***)," Elder Long explained. "It does not judge strength. It judges character."
Li Chen stepped forward.
"What must I do?"
"Place your hand upon the mirror."
The moment his palm touched the crystal, the hall disappeared.
Li Chen found himself standing in the courtyard of the Su Family Manor.
Everything looked exactly as it had three years ago.
He heard the familiar laughter.
"Look at the useless son-in-law!"
"He's nothing without the Su Family!"
His fists tightened.
The memory felt real.
Then the scene changed.
He saw Su Xinyi kneeling before Old Madam Su, begging her to stop insulting him.
Tears streamed down her face.
Li Chen's heart ached.
Suddenly, a voice echoed through the illusion.
"If you possessed unlimited power then, would you have destroyed everyone who mocked you?"
Li Chen closed his eyes.
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because revenge would only create more hatred."
The illusion shattered.
Another scene appeared.
This time, Li Chen saw Elder Han lying on the ground, badly wounded.
Members of the Shadow Alliance surrounded him.
A masked leader laughed.
"Choose, Dragon Emperor."
"You may save Elder Han..."
"...or your wife."
Su Xinyi was trapped beneath collapsing rubble on the opposite side of the battlefield.
Li Chen's breathing became heavy.
It was an impossible choice.
Then he remembered his grandfather's words.
"Power used to protect becomes eternal."
Instead of rushing toward either person, Li Chen raised the Dragon Soul Sword.
Golden spiritual energy burst from the blade, forming a protective barrier around both Elder Han and Su Xinyi.
The illusion cracked once more.
The crystal mirror glowed brilliantly.
Outside the illusion, every elder watched in amazement.
"No Dragon Emperor has ever answered the second trial that way," one elder whispered.
Elder Long smiled proudly.
"He chose to save everyone instead of sacrificing one for another."
The illusion faded completely.
Li Chen opened his eyes and withdrew his hand from the mirror.
The crystal suddenly floated into the air.
A beam of golden light descended upon him.
The Dragon Emperor Ring shone brighter than ever before.
A deep voice echoed throughout the chamber.
"Trial completed."
"Heart acknowledged."
"The Second Seal of the Dragon Emperor Bloodline has been released."
Power surged through Li Chen's body.
His spiritual energy doubled, and the Dragon Soul Sword vibrated with excitement.
Before anyone could celebrate, a guard burst into the hall.
"Elder Long!"
"The Shadow Alliance has attacked one of our hidden strongholds!"
"They're demanding that the Dragon Emperor face them."
Silence filled the chamber.
Li Chen slowly turned toward the exit.
He tightened his grip on the Dragon Soul Sword.
"If they want me..."
"...then I'll meet them."
Behind him, the Dragon Heart Mirror glowed one final time before returning to silence.
The real battle was about to begin.
