**Lucas’ POV**
After stopping abruptly, she quickly got out of the driver’s seat and walked over to my door and pulled it open. She leaned over and punched me cleanly in the face, which left me momentarily stunned, giving her the opportunity to pull me out of the car and toss me unceremoniously to the sidewalk.
I could see people laughing and pointing at me as she drove off without a backward glance, leaving me in the dust. Well, that finally answered my question on how she was able to protect herself from questionable characters at night.
**Rose’s POV**
The lingering thoughts from the previous day’s encounter kept me wide awake, wrestling with regrets and uncertainties, as I questioned the rashness of my decision. Perhaps there were underlying reasons or circumstances that I hadn’t considered. Doubts swirled in my mind, as I pondered whether he had a rationale for his behavior, or if he had really forgotten our interaction altogether. The possibility of being deceived or taken for a ride lingered heavily, overshadowing the idea that he might not actually be a ghost.
As I walked toward the office engulfed with these thoughts, a vehicle resembling the one he had driven before raced past me towards the company’s basement carpark.
Different thoughts and scenes of him coming to my office for payback for the way I treated him yesterday filled my mind, and I was greatly mortified. I quickly hurried towards the basement to beg for forgiveness before he could make a scene; however, it was sealed shut before I could reach it. Disheartened, I considered the possibility that my mind may have been playing tricks on me.
Resigned to this conclusion, I dragged myself into the office, determined to carry out my daily tasks as efficiently as possible, after which I would contact him later in the evening to apologize.
I had thought about his strange proposal yesterday, and despite the uncertainties clouding my mind, my pressing need for money had overshadowed my doubts, compelling me to pursue this opportunity.
Throughout the work day, I kept looking out for him, expecting him to burst in at any moment; however, I didn’t encounter anyone that was remotely familiar to him, so I brushed aside the possibility that he was the one in the car and immersed myself into my work, till closing time.
After work, I pulled out my phone to call him, when I remembered that I had blocked and deleted his contact yesterday. I chided myself for my impulsivity and quickly thought of how to reach him. After careful thought, I guessed that the most likely place to meet him would be the cemetery, so I headed there in hopes of encountering him. I arrived at the cemetery and went in, but after searching for him for about 20 minutes, I realized that he wasn’t there.
I was still considering my next course of action when my phone rang. I took it out of my pocket, and it revealed an unknown caller ID. I hoped it was him.
I picked the call and was relieved to be greeted by his deep, husky voice; however, I quickly schooled my voice so he wouldn’t know just how grateful was to hear from him.
“Are you still seething?” he asked.
“No, I’m not. I was just about to call you, but you beat me to it.” I replied, to which he huffed in disbelief. I decided to ignore this and instead said,
“I’ve considered your offer. I accept it.” He was about to say something excitedly, but I quickly interrupted him.
“However, I have some conditions. Where can we meet to discuss them?” I said.
“Fine. Let’s meet at the Midnight Star.” He replied, which was a nearby restaurant, to which I agreed.
I hailed a cab and gave the directions, and after arriving at the restaurant, I was led to a seat by the window where he had made prior reservations. He was seated there drinking a cup of tea, but as soon as he sighted me, he got up and pulled a seat for me.
“Thank you.” I said, accepting his gesture, and he nodded in reply. After we sat down, I was about to start talking, when he motioned for the waiter.
“Order something first. They have the best steak around here.” He said. I quietly obliged, realizing that I was famished. Our order arrived, and we ate in silence, after which he ordered dessert.
“You said you have some terms to the contract,” he began, “Let’s hear them.” He said, once the meal was over.
“I want a million dollars.” I said straight to the point, my face devoid of emotions. “Half up front. You can pay the rest after the contract is done.”
“Is that all?” he said, seemingly disappointed by my lack of ambition.
“Yes.”
He nodded as he agreed to my conditions.
“Also, there will be a 100,000-dollar bonus if you execute the job exceptionally.” He added. I was just about to refuse the offer when he handed me an envelope. I took it and curiously pulled out the document inside, wondering what it could be. It was a contract, and as I glanced over it, he quickly explained what it contained.
“It’s a contract. You can go through it with your lawyer.” He said. “Don’t think about fleeing after the contract has commenced under any circumstances. If you violate the terms, you will pay double that amount in penalty. Do you understand?”
I felt slightly offended that he didn’t trust me, but I quickly reminded myself that I was a complete stranger to him.
“Deal.” I said, quickly sealing the contract with my signature. He seemed to relax a bit afterwards and took a copy of the document with my signature for himself.
With the business of the day concluded, he stood up to leave
“Apologies for leaving like this, but I have a meeting to attend to. I’ll be in touch,” he said, as he stood up to leave.
I nodded, and he quickly settled the bill and left. As I sat there alone, I quietly reflected on the events that had transpired and asked myself if I had undersold my worth in this arrangement.
After sitting for a while and processing these thoughts, I stood up and left the café, making my way home. I quickly made my way to the bathroom to freshen up, when I received a notification. A quick glance at my phone revealed a deposit of 500,000 dollars. Astonished, I couldn’t believe he had already transferred the upfront payment.
All thoughts of under selling myself quickly vanished as I dashed outside and embraced my mother.
“Mum, mum, our debts will be settled soon.” I said as I hugged her, tears streaming down my face.
“Slow down, child. What is the meaning of this?” She said as she hugged me back. I quickly explained to her that I would clear all her debts soon, but I refused to tell her how I got the money despite her persistent nagging.
“Don’t worry mum. I didn’t do anything illegal.” I said.
“I also didn’t do anything morally wrong,” I quickly added when I saw the sudden look of horror across her face.
After she realized that I wouldn’t spill the beans, she let me go, and I settled down to enjoy a meal, after which I took some much-needed rest, grateful for the sudden turn of fortune.
**Lucas’ POV**
As I left the restaurant, I felt a sense of triumph course through me. Finally, an intricate part of my plan had finally fallen into place. There were so many crucial steps I need to take to honor the vow I made to my late mother, and this was just the beginning.
I returned home and encountered the familiar faces of my father, stepmother, and stepsister already seated at the dining table. I paused for a while and considered joining them; however, I felt suffocated just by their presence, so I decided to go to my room instead.
As I attempted to walk past them, my father suddenly called out to me.
“Lucas, come here, let’s have dinner,” he said. I turned and at his order and saw my stepmother and her daughter looking at me with hostility in their eyes. I wanted to leave, but I didn’t have a choice, so I sat down at the end of the table and began to dish out food into a plate.
We ate in tense silence, and I was about to excuse myself when my father suddenly spoke, breaking the oppressive quietness.
“So, tell me about this girl you mentioned earlier,” he enquired. “Who is she? What family is she from?” Each word he uttered seemed to add weight to an already burdensome task.
“You’ll meet her this weekend, father,” I said. “Please be patient. You can ask your questions then.” I replied with a forced calmness.
He seemed dissatisfied with my answer; but he didn’t press the matter any further.
“Alright,” He said after a few minutes of careful thought. “Ensure to prepare well for her arrival.”
I nodded as I excused myself from the table and went to my room. I consoled myself with the knowledge that this orchestrated charade was a necessary stepping stone towards my ultimate aspirations.
***********
The much-anticipated weekend finally arrived, enveloped in a serene blessing and a radiant brightness. Within the confines of the Mogan, the staff bustled about, preparing food and meticulously cleaning every nook and cranny of the mansion and also ensuring that everything was in pristine order.
**Rose’s POV**
I was finally going to meet the enigmatic ‘ghost guy’s’ parents today. I had mixed feelings though, as on one hand, I was happy to finally be rid of the debts on one hand, while on the other, I was filled with fear of making a mistake and having to pay two million dollars. Where was I going to get the money if I failed?
“Oh well, I’ll do my best, and that’s all that matters,” I said, as I brushed aside all negative thoughts. I had planned to go to the mall today and give myself a well-deserved manicure and massage, when I received a sudden call from the ghost. I quickly picked the call wondering why he was calling me at such an early hour.
“Hello,” I answered.
“Where are you? Did you forget our meeting at the mall today?” He said, his voice laced with irritation and impatience. I suddenly remembered that he had texted me yesterday to meet him at the mall.
“I’m so sorry,” I replied quickly, “I’ll be there in a minute.”
Without a moment’s hesitation, I hurriedly changed to suitable clothing and rushed to the designated location, and after what seemed like forever, I finally arrived looking disheveled. I quickly spotted him standing by a fountain looking pissed off. I considered fleeing from his anger that was well deserved, but he suddenly looked up and sighted me, so I quickly ran over to him instead.
“I’m so sorry,” I said as I bowed as deeply as I could before he could say a word. “It was such a busy week, I totally forgot.”
He seemed taken aback by my unexpected humility, so he brushed my lateness aside.
“Let’s go. We have a lot of work to do.” He finally said after considering my apology for a while.
I breathed a sigh of relief and was quickly whisked away into an extravagant shopping spree. He selected so many opulent dresses, bags, and shoes, and at a point, I lost track of just how many he had bought. It was evident that he hailed from a wealthy family, considering how much money he had spent in the span of a few hours.
Finally, when he was satisfied with all he had bought, he instructed the staff to give me a makeover with the most expensive items they had. I didn’t even have time to protest before I was whisked away again.
As I stood adorned in their finest garments, I felt transformed, as I exuded a beauty that seemed alien to me. I unknowingly looked forward to seeing his reaction; however, I was disappointed when he merely glanced over me and said it was time to depart.
I felt unfamiliar seating in the back with him, instead of the driver’s seat, as we made our way to his house. As we drove there, he handed me a paper that contained some information about himself. Lucas Alexander Mogan, that was his full name. The paper also contained some other information that I needed to make our engagement seem believable. As I read the document, a sense of déjà vu washed over me, but try as I might, I couldn’t piece together where I had heard this information before. This oddly familiar, yet elusive memory taunted me with its unresolved mystery.
I was still trying to remember, when we arrived at his home. I looked out of the window and took in the grandeur of it all. It felt more like a castle than a mansion.
As I stepped out of the car, he came over to my side and urged me to be confident. The security escorted us inside the lavish mansion, where we were greeted by the staff. As we traversed the corridors, a surge of recognition began to surface in my memory, but before I could make sense of it, we entered the main living room.
There, in the opulent chamber, stood his family, and at that moment, the pieces of the puzzle fell into place with a resounding click. I was filled with shock as it finally dawned on me that this was none other than the illustrious Mogan estate.
Stunned by this revelation, my thoughts raced, as I finally connected the dots that ‘ghost guy’ and the clandestine Lucas, the illegitimate son of the prestigious Mogan family, were one and the same. However, before I could process this newfound knowledge, a chilling sensation disrupted my thoughts, and I looked up to see the imposing figure of the director advancing towards me.
