Chapter 3: Under the Blood Moon
The air in the cabin grew instantly heavy, thick with the intoxicating scent of rain, pine, and the undeniable raw power radiating from Ethan. His fingers remained warm against Elena’s chin, his luminous amber gaze holding her captive. Every instinct in her body screamed that she was standing too close to danger, yet her feet were rooted to the floor, completely paralyzed by the sheer magnetism of the Alpha.
"Let go of me, Ethan," Elena repeated, though her voice lacked the fierce conviction she intended. Her breath hitched as his thumb brushed ever so lightly across her jawline, sending a tremor of pure electricity racing straight down her spine.
A low, vibrating growl rumbled deep within Ethan’s chest, a sound born of restraint and a primal possessiveness that he was struggling to keep in check. "You think you can just step into these woods, ignore every warning, and walk away untouched?" His voice was a harsh, raspy whisper that brushed against her skin like silk. "The forest knows you now, Elena. And more importantly... I know you."
Before she could form a reply, the wind outside shrieked violently against the cabin walls, and the distant, haunting howl of a wolf echoed through the valley. It was a deep, resonant call that seemed to shake the very foundations of the earth.
Ethan’s expression instantly hardened. His amber eyes flicked toward the darkened window before returning to her with an intense, burning urgency. "The moon is rising," he said, his tone dropping into a dangerous, commanding register. "And tonight, no place in these woods is safe—especially not the open borders."
"What are you talking about?" Elena demanded, finally swatting his hand away from her face and stepping back, her chest heaving as she tried to put physical distance between them. "Why are you always showing up here like a ghost, telling me what to do?"
"Because you belong to the pack's territory now, whether you chose it or not," Ethan replied sharply, his large frame stepping forward to close the gap again, refusing to let her escape his presence. "A rogue pack has been sniffing around the northern ridges. They smell human blood, Elena. They smell yours."
The words sent a chilling draft through the room, far colder than any storm wind. Elena’s eyes widened slightly as the reality of his warning began to sink in. The strange glances from the villagers, the eerie warnings at the general store, and the massive silver-black wolf she had seen in the clearing—it all wove together into a terrifying tapestry of survival.
"If they find you alone out here, they won't just threaten you," Ethan continued, his voice lowering to a harsh, protective growl that surprised even him. "They will tear this cabin down to its foundations. That is why you are coming with me."
"Going with you?" Elena scoffed, crossing her arms defensively over her chest, trying her absolute best to mask the mounting panic clawing at her throat. "And trade one cage for another? I don't think so. I'd rather take my chances here!"
Ethan didn't argue. In a flash of motion too fast for the human eye to track, he closed the remaining distance, scooped her effortlessly off her feet into his arms, and strode toward the door.
"Hey! Put me down right now!" Elena gasped, instantly slamming her fists against his solid chest, but it felt like hitting a wall of absolute stone. He didn't even flinch.
"Save your breath, little human," Ethan muttered, kicking the door wide open as the howling wind and torrential rain rushed in to greet them. "Your choices ended the moment you stepped foot into Ravenwood."
As he carried her out into the blinding storm, plunging straight into the pitch-black abyss of the whispering woods, Elena knew her life would never be the same again. The beast had claimed her, and the chase had only just begun. The freezing rain lashed against Elena’s face as Ethan carried her deeper into the dense, churning shadows of the forest. The canopy of towering pines blocked out what little moonlight managed to pierce through the stormy sky, plunging the woods into an absolute, suffocating darkness. Yet, Ethan moved through the tangled undergrowth with terrifying ease, his steps steady and unwavering as if he could see every hidden root and stone.
"Put me down!" Elena shouted over the roaring wind, her hands gripping the shoulders of his wet jacket. "You can't just kidnap me because you're worried about some rogues!"
"I am not kidnapping you, I am saving your stubborn life," Ethan’s deep voice rumbled against her, carrying an absolute authority that brooked no argument. "The northern ridge is the primary hunting ground for the outcast packs. If they caught your scent at the cabin, they are already tracking us."
Before Elena could muster another retort, a sharp, spine-chilling sound pierced the howling wind—a high-pitched, echoing howl that was entirely different from Ethan's deep resonance. It was hungry, jagged, and much closer than it had been a moment ago.
Ethan stopped dead in his tracks. His body instantly went rigid, every muscle in his frame tensing like coiled steel. The raw, predatory aura radiating from him intensified tenfold, making the air around them feel heavy and electric.
"They're here," Ethan muttered under his breath, his amber eyes flashing dangerously in the dark as he set Elena down behind the massive, moss-covered trunk of an ancient oak tree.
"Stay right here. Do not make a sound, and whatever you do, do not run," Ethan commanded, his voice dropping into a fierce, low growl that vibrated straight through Elena’s bones.
Before she could even nod, Ethan turned away from her and stepped out into the open clearing. The shadows seemed to wrap around him, shifting and twisting in the moonlight as his body began to tremble with a sudden, violent shiver. Elena held her breath, pressing her back flat against the rough bark of the tree, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and fierce fascination as she watched the impossible transformation unfold before her very eyes.
