Chapter Three

2575 Words
When the clock struck five, Rose set an alarm for five thirty, when she gets engrossed in a book, she loses all track of time. The alarm sounds and Rose gets off the bed, leaving a bookmark in the spot she finished. Rose heads downstairs, the guys were in the living room witching television again. “Everyone ready?” she asks. Everyone gets to their feet and follow out of the house. Last one out locking up. Everyone climbs into three of the nine SUVs parked on the large drive and head to Mr Mathews house. Scott bought all the guys their own SUVs, though they aren’t always used at the same time, they needed them in case it required everyone to go in different directions. There was even multiple cars parked on the large driveway for everyday use. When they arrive at the house, Rose looks at the large white building, a typical rich American home, “If the wife if some stuck-up snob, I will not be responsible for my actions” she says. James and Damien in the back chuckle at Rose’s statement. “Behave” Scott warned his daughter from the driver’s seat as they pulled into the drive of the house. She turns to look at him and overly bats her eyelashes, “Of course daddy, I will be the perfect angel” she mocks. Scott rolls his eyes, trying hard to hide the amused smile, but it was no use. The front door opens before they reach the door and Richard Mathews steps out and smile on his face, he seemed to look better since the meeting. He was relieved that they were here to help. “Welcome everyone” he greets. Rose sighs, she was never a people person, only putting on a face when dealing with clients, other than that she avoided them like the plague. Walking up the steps, Mr Mathews shakes everyone’s hands over enthusiastically. Rose can take the strain, but it came as a surprise and made her hand ache for a while. When they enter the house, Rose is automatically looking around, black and white themed, and clean. Maids. The first thought. Richard Mathews shows them to the living room where a blonde-haired woman in her mid-thirties stood next to the fire place. One hand across her abdomen, her other elbow resting on it whilst the stood staring into the distance, her hands playing with the pearls around her neck. When the guys pile into the room, her thought is broken, Rose steps forward and holds her hand out to do the initial introduction. “Mrs Mathews, I am Rose, and this is my father Scott Quinten, he will be running the operation”. The women looked at Rose in surprise, not expecting a young girl to be involved in this kind of matter. She curiously sticks her hand out and shakes the young girl’s hand “You’re a bit young to be involved in things like this, are you not?”. Rose smiles, “Probably, but I’ve been involved for as long as I can remember” she says. “Besides, many of our cases involve women in nasty situations and having a female about the place makes them feel easy about having eight strange men about the house”. Lara chuckles, she liked this girl, confident. “Please Rose, take a seat”. Rose nods and does as she was offered. Lara sits down and faces Rose, Scott and the guys remain standing, their eyes already searching the room. “For this introduction, I would like to get to know you and vice versa, your husband has already told us the situation, so I was hoping the guys could get on with looking around the house and outside premises?” Rose wonders. Lara nods, “Of course, you have access to the entire house, all rooms, if you find anything locked just come find Richard of myself”. Scott thanks the lady, resting his hand on his daughters’ shoulder for a second before following his team out to look around. “So, Mrs Mathews…” Rose begins. Lara waves her hand, “Mrs Mathews was Richard’s mother, call me Lara” she insists. Rose nods, “Of course, Lara, lets start with your children, names and ages” readying herself to jot things down. “My eldest is Ace, just turned twenty” Lara begins and Rose jots it down on her personal info sheet. “My second is Tyler, he is seventeen”. Rose nods her head, “Does Ace live with you?”. Lara shakes her head. “Do you have any idea who has been sending you the threats?”. Lara shakes her head, “It could be because of my boys, they always get in trouble, but it could be the business, I don’t know”. Rose sees Lara’s hands beginning to shake, “What exactly is your business?” was the next question. By then Lara was beginning to get teary eyed. Leaning forward, Rose places a hand on Lara’s forearm, “We’re going to do everything we can to keep you and your family safe, but for us to do that, I need to know this okay?”. Lara sniffles “I’m sorry, nothing severe has happened yet and I’m already a mess”. Rose smiles, “The threats alone are enough for something to happen”. Lara composes herself and Rose asks the next question. After asking about her business, Rose moved back to her children. “I know this may seem an odd question, but unfortunately I have to pry, what are Tyler and Ace like with girls, do they sleep around or are they the type to stick to one?” Rose had an idea where this would go, boys will be boys, but she couldn’t put any answer down, it had to be from the client’s mouth. “Tyler is a complete manwhore” Lara laughs, Rose was shocked to hear her use that word. “He has a different girl every week, if not every day, and Ace was just as bad, but since he left school his focus has been on his gang” Lara speaks nonchalantly. Rose looks up from her notepad at the word ‘gang’ “I’m sorry, gang?” she questions. Lara nods, “Nothing major, a few have been in juvey for petty theft and things like that, but nothing excessive, they all grew up together, Ace has been in juvey, but I’m sure you’ll see all that when you look into us”. Rose nods. Making a note and circling it to look up as soon as possible. “What about the boys’ personalities?” if she knew more about the boys, Rose could pair them with a suitable guard, she already had two in mind for them, but she needed all the facts. “Tyler is a playboy jock; girls, football, parties, all the typical high school stuff, video games, drinking, cars” Lara states. “Ace, I guess you can consider him a bad boy compared to Tyler” Lara chuckles, “Smoking, motorcycle; which I hate, but he won’t get rid of it”. “Drugs?” Rose asks. Lara shakes her head, “I haven’t seen him take any, nor have I seen him with the effects of drugs. A further ten minutes pass and Rose has two, nearly three pages of information about the entire family and the business. Just in time for her father Scott to walk back in with Mr Mathews. “Right on time, we’ve just finished” Rose states. Mr Mathews joins his wife and Scott stands behind the seat Rose is sitting on. “Now we just need to meet your sons” she says. “Tyler should be home any minute, But Ace hasn’t responded to my calls, which means he could be home any time, sometimes gone for weeks at a time” Mr Mathews says. Rose sighs, “I could do with seeing them both, but I guess one can do for now, we can’t protect Ace if he doesn’t show”. The couple nod in understanding. It wasn’t long after that the front door opened and a male voice echoes though the hallway. But he wasn’t alone, a high pitches screech reaches everyone, and you could see Lara and her husband physically wince before sighing. He did this often by the looks on their faces. Moments later the son arrives with a girl in barely any clothing behind him. When he sees the mass of guys in the room he freezes, fear suddenly washing over him “What’s going on?” he asks. They clearly haven’t told him yet. Rose glances at Lara to see a guilty smile on her face. “Tyler, who’s your friend?” Mr Mathews questions his son, but there was clear annoyance in his tone. He remains silent so the girl steps forward to introduce herself, “I’m Tara, Tyler’s girlfriend” she squeaks out. When Tyler hears the introduction, his eyes practically pop out of his head, Rose turned her face, so he didn’t see the amusement on her face. Mr Mathews rolls his eyes making it impossible for Rose to keep her laughter silent. A snort escapes her lips and she quickly places a hand on her mouth to stop any more sounds coming out. She hoped no one heard. Mr Mathews glances Rose’s way and smiles, but it was gone just as quick as it came. He heard her. The room remained silent, so Rose spoke up once she composed herself. “Well Tara is not required here and needs to leave” she says. The girl turns to Rose sat on the couch and the smirky smile on her face vanishes and a look of annoyance took place, “You have no right to tell me to leave” she says in a harsh tone. It didn’t affect Rose. The young girl gets to her feet and turns to face Tara, “Actually it does, as of now, you are no longer allowed into the house without my authority, so you can leave on your own, or I can have you escorted out” Rose’s voice suddenly changed from nice to one full of authority. Tyler finally snaps out of his shock and looks at Rose, “I don’t know who you are, but you have no right to tell me who I can and can’t have over”. Mr Morrison sided with Rose and told his son, “Tyler, she leaves now, and then we need to talk” his voice demanding, he couldn’t deny his father. When he escorts the girl out, Tyler walks back into the living room with a scowl on his face. Rose didn’t bother to wait for Tyler to moan, she jumped right in, “Meet Ryan” Rose introduces, pointing to one of the guys stood in the room. Ryan steps forward and nods towards Tyler, “Your new best friend, since the situation has occurred, he will be with you twenty-four-seven until the problem is solved”. Tyler sighs and looks to his parents, “Is this because of the death threats?” he asks. Both his parents nod. It took a little convincing, but Tyler agreed. Ryan had a happy look, Rose knew he would fit in with the high school crowd, especially with the girls, he just could cross any boundaries due to the age. The rest of the evening, everyone planned out where they would be and when rotations would take place. Dominic set up his security cameras in a spare room upstairs with the help of Michael and the team found no trace of any bug in the house. “So, the cameras are set up for the nights, we will be alerted if anyone is trying to get in, you have access to the camera’s too, set up in the spare room, just don’t touch anything. We will be here in the morning at seven and you can ask anymore questions you have” Rose explains to the couple as the guys put the leftover gear into the back of the cars. “Lara, Mr Mathews, we will see you tomorrow” shaking hands with both, Rose leaves getting into the car with her father and heading home. It was lose to ten in the evening when they returned, and Rose was ready for bed, her body was yet to adjust to the new times. Some of the guys sat down with drinks, Rose headed to the office to do her filing, she was never one to leave paperwork, it had to be done as soon as possible. She opened the laptop on the desk and accessed the cameras set up at the Mathews home. When they load the night-vision kicks in and she can look at the screen clearly. Going through the notes, Rose highlights important parts with certain coloured highlighters; yellow to research, red for personnel information etc. All of this needed to be organised before she went to bed, there wouldn’t be any time in the morning. Rose looks at the screen and taps the keys to look at all camera’s everything was okay for a minute until the front camera alarms went off. Rose viewed the live feed and saw Tyler sneaking out by climbing the wall by the gate. She shakes her head. This kid was going to be a handful. Rose contemplated alerting his father, but she let him have his final freedom for one final night. Rose completed most of her work, all that was left was the personnel searches online, but that can be done tomorrow when she was over at the Mathews house. Closing the laptop; the camera alerts went to her phone as well as everyone else’s. She hadn’t eaten dinner yet, but she wasn’t really hungry, grabbing a bottle of water, Rose says her ‘goodnights’ to everyone that remained downstairs and went to bed. A quick change into her PJs and she falls asleep the moment her head hits the pillow. The blaring alarm had Rose groaning, she felt as though she barely slept, she turns over to hit the alarm, whacking it too harsh it falls to the ground. When she gets out of bed, Rose picks up the alarm and puts it back on the table and heads into the bathroom to shower and change. Another pair of ripped skinny jeans; it seemed they were the only trousers she had. Slipping on her Nirvana band tee, and pairing them with her black converse, Rose grabs her beanie, phone and laptop and heads out the room. Putting the laptops in her bag, she heads to the office to get the other two of her father’s and places them by the door for her to take along with the files. “Did you just take my laptop?” Scott questioned. Rose nodded and he chuckled. “You have a laptop; you still take mine and then I got another one and you take that too”. “I need one for college, the other two are for security checks and surveillance” she says. “So, you’re going to do college and security work?” Dominic asks as he sips his coffee. “Yes” she says. Jack adds in “Won’t the security work be too distraction to you” he asks. Rose shakes her head “It’s called multitasking” she says. A few of the guys snicker at the statement and Jack rolls his eyes and goes back to his breakfast. When everyone had finished, they double checked the equipment they were bringing. “Everyone have their weapons?” she asks as they stood outside their vehicles. They all nod, “Dominic, security tech?” he nods “Michael had the camera equipment and I will check the ones already set up when we arrive”. Rose nods her head, “Load up” she calls. “Today is going to be interesting” she mutters as she climbs into the car. A ten-minute drive and they were back at the Mathews home. As everyone exited the vehicles, Rose spoke again, “Ryan, Leighton and dad are with me, Dominic and Michael head to the camera system and everyone else do a full sweep before heading to your posts, radios on channel thirteen and check in every hour”. They all dispersed. Michael joined Rose and the others who weren’t on perimeter duty into the house. Greeted by Lara this time at the door. Allowing them inside, Lara headed to the living room with some of the men whilst Dominic and Michael went to check on the security cameras.
