Stanton sat in his office and stared out of the panoramic window that overlooked the grassy area and the other buildings on the grounds. The sun was high, but passing clouds blocked out the brightness and the warmth. He watched people walking here and there, coming and going, oblivious of the chaos that was unfolding in Stanton’s world. He would turn and look at his desk phone every so often, waiting for it to ring. He was expecting two calls. One was from Steel, and the other was from upstairs. No matter how this played out, Stanton knew his career was over, had been for some time. He was just treading water until it happened.
