Riley POV
My brain felt like it had been fried by the time I made it to lunch. As I entered the cafeteria, I saw Violet sitting at a table at the back, surrounded by a few other girls. I carefully made my way over there, smiling politely at the other girls, and then sat next to Violet, relaxing as I felt the tension in my body fade away.
“Girls, this is Riley,” Violet announced dramatically. “Riley, this is Samantha, Bunny, and Ivy.”
All cute names, but Bunny? What kind of parent names their child Bunny? Easter must be a b***h.
I looked at Bunny, almost choking on the laughter that wanted to come out, and she smirked.
“Don’t ask. My parents are into stupid names. My younger sister is called Clover,” she rolled her eyes.
I snorted and then looked at her apologetically. “Sorry, sometimes I don't think."
“Don’t mention it. I’m used to it,” she shrugged and then smiled, not offended in the slightest.
Ivy just giggled. “Bunny’s all bark and no bite. You’ll get used to her. It’s nice to meet you, Riley,” she chirped, her eyes dancing.
She was a petite little thing with red hair and green eyes. She nibbled on an apple, and Violet grabbed a muffin off her tray. All of the girls looked at me as I fidgeted with my hands, feeling them going clammy.
My parents hadn’t given me any money for lunch, so it looked as though I was going without. I inwardly sighed, feeling frustrated.
Bunny opened her mouth, and I saw Violet shake her head in the corner of my eye. Before I knew it, there was half a sandwich in front of me, a banana, and a yoghurt. I blinked. “You don’t have to…” I trailed off.
God, I was hungry. I almost salivated.
“We’re not about to let you starve,” Violet said, “and you don’t have to explain anything. Just eat," she advised, and I almost cried at how understanding she was without judging.
"God, this is good," I mumbled around a piece of sandwich.
It felt so good to satiate my hunger slightly instead of feeling the constant gnawing pains.
“I see Queen b***h is surrounded by her harpies,” Samantha commented with a grin, motioning with her hand.
I looked over and saw none other than Sofia surrounded by a group of cheerleaders. She was holding court, the centre of attention, the very image of a queen and her underlings.
“Is that what you call her?” I asked, interested and smirking to myself.
“Yeah, cause she’s a b***h and everybody thinks she’s a queen,” Violet said, shaking her head. “She thinks she rules the school, and if you get on her bad side…” she trailed off, “then she and the cheerleaders will make your life a living hell.”
Huh. Looked like my friends weren’t exactly fans of Sofia. That made all of us. I wasn't exactly enamored with my twin sister either, but for different reasons.
“What class do you have next, Riley?” she asked.
“Gym,” I groaned, “as if today isn’t torture enough.”
The thought of having to run or do some form of exercise was not appealing to me in the slightest.
“Same,” Violet said excitedly and then deflated. “But the coach is a hard ass and enjoys torturing us, mere mortals. I swear he’s on steroids or something," she grumbled as the other girls nodded emphatically in agreement.
“How bad can it be?” I said with a shrug of my shoulders, "It's just gym."
“Oh, you poor deluded little thing,” Bunny said with sympathy, “he once made me run the track seven times for giggling at something he said.”
“He made me do squats for three minutes straight because I couldn’t climb the rope to the ceiling,” Samantha chimed in, shaking her arms. “I can’t help it if my arms are twigs. Besides, since when does knowing how to climb a rope prove useful in the real world? Exercise is overrated,” she said with a sincerity that made me giggle.
She made it sound as though it was torture. I didn't believe it could be that bad. This wasn't like Nightingale Academy, where punishments were the norm. Squats and running were easy in comparison to those.
“I guess I’ll have to be careful then. I wouldn’t want to be forced to climb a rope. What if I fell and somebody had to catch my fat ass? I wouldn’t know which of us would be traumatized more,” I cracked, and the girls pealed with laughter.
“I knew they were going to like you,” Violet said smugly as she winked at me.
I opened my mouth to retort, and Bunny’s eyes went wide as she opened her mouth to say something, her finger desperately pointing behind me. I started to turn, but it was too late. I flinched as I felt cold liquid poured over my head and back. I fully turned around to see a brunette in a cheerleader’s costume smirking at me.
Shit was about to go down.
