Riley POV
"Earth to Riley," Violet waved her hands in front of my face, making me look away from Sofia, who was glaring openly at me. "We're supposed to be dribbling, remember? I don't want to draw Coach Matthews' attention to us. I'm not exactly wanting to face a punishment from him," she added, and I blinked, coming back to reality.
"Yeah, yeah," I muttered, taking off, Violet struggling to keep up with me.
I reached the end of the court in triumph and then threw the ball to Violet, moving in front of her. She was panting.
"You got lucky," she declared, "be prepared to feel my wrath!"
She went to move past me, and I reached out, smacking the ball away from her and causing her to halt in her tracks, a stunned look on her face as I laughed.
"Told you I was good," I smirked.
"I was just warming up," she protested as I fetched the ball.
"Keep telling yourself that," I shot back, readying myself.
She bent over, moving side to side, glaring at me. "Let's see you get past me now!"
I whirled and then took off, Violet's footsteps sounding frantically behind me. I reached the boundary line and bounced the ball, Violet looking disgruntled.
We looked towards the cheerleaders, some of them openly pointing at me and whispering amongst themselves.
"What the hell is their problem? I've never seen them be so mean towards a new girl before," Violet frowned.
Another student came up to us, a tall-looking boy with a wide grin on his face. We frowned at him.
"Can I help you?" I asked slowly.
He smirked. "How much?"
"How much what?" I asked, confused, Violet glancing between us, a furrow in her brow.
"Well, it's fairly obvious that you're not on a scholarship, and according to the cheerleaders over there, you're paying the tuition fees in cash. There's only one way you could be making that amount of money, and I have to say," he gave a low whistle, "with a body like that, no wonder you're so popular. How much?"
"What the hell are you talking about?" I growled.
"Don't play games with me," he said impatiently, "How much to have my turn with you?"
Realization dawned. He was implying I was a hooker who slept with men to make money for tuition. Another dirty trick of Sofia's. She knew I couldn't deny it without implicating her as my family, which was forbidden. I balled my hands into fists. I'd already hit one person today, and this boy was making it likely he was about to be the next victim. Luckily, Violet stepped in.
"She's not a hooker," she snarled, "and the cheerleaders are a bunch of little bitches. God, I can't believe you fell for such a disgusting lie."
"Oh, really. Then how did she pay for her tuition?" he shot back, "you've only known her for one day. Let me tell you, nobody from poor families can afford this school. Right," he turned back to me, ignoring Violet, "I'm prepared to pay 1000 to have my turn with you, what do you say?" he said, leaning in close, licking his lips.
Violet shoved him. "You f*****g walking STD," she hissed, "manwhore. So desperate to have some girl he's willing to pay for it," she continued, her voice rising slightly, "maybe you should ask yourself why you can't get a f*****g girlfriend."
"Listen b***h," he began heatedly, and then became aware that Coach Mathews was beginning to make his way towards us, a frown on his face. "Never mind. I'll see you around w***e," he spat at me and quickly vanished as I let out a large exhale.
"You should have beaten his ass like Bianca's," Violet growled, "god he's such a wanker. Thinks he's all that."
"If I did, I would be expelled," I muttered, beginning to dribble as the Coach halted, watching us intently.
This time, Violet smacked the ball out of my hand. I could hear the peals of laughter from the cheerleaders who weren't even trying to disguise that they were making fun of me. I did note, however, that Bianca was not amongst them.
"Ignore them," Violet panted, dribbling as I followed her slowly, my heart no longer in it, "they're just a bunch of snobbish bitches too afraid to confront you face to face after Bianca. They've always been ugly on the inside. God knows why they manage to attract handsome Jocks as boyfriends. Maybe the two cliques are as dumb as each other. Besides," she added, bouncing the ball on the line with satisfaction on her face, "one day we'll be their bosses, and we can make their lives a living hell. There's no future in backflips and somersaults," she added scornfully as I laughed.
She'd said exactly what I'd been thinking previously. We were on the same wavelength.
"Riley Sullivan," a teacher barked from the gymnasium doorway, "you're being summoned to the Principal's office. Follow me and hurry up."
He did not sound pleased.
"Damnit, Bianca snitched," Violet scowled, blowing a loose hair out of her face, looking exasperated.
"To be fair, it's difficult to hide a d**k on your face," I chuckled, not surprised in the slightest.
"I'll put flowers on your grave!" Violet shouted loyally behind me, "and cry real tears! Farewell, my friend."
I snorted despite myself.
