I froze the moment he asked. How did he tell us apart? I began to quiver as I opened my mouth to speak.
“Wh…What do you mean by that?” I managed to ask, ensuring I wasn’t making eye contact with him.
“I mean, you are not behaving like the Bridget I know.” He said, removing his arms from the window.
“The Bridget you know?” I tried to sound as natural as I could.
“Yeah, we’ve met twice, remember?” I shook my head positively at his question.
He placed his hands in his pocket, “I thought you had ADHD the first time we met. You were jumpy and inattentive. And desperate for attention too.’’ He said, looking at his wristwatch.
“You know my fate is tied with yours now, and I’ve come to accept it. So you don’t have to worry about my change in attitude.” I said with a smile on my face.
“People don’t change easily Bridget, especially people like you.” He smiled back, in a mischievous manner.
“I’ll be a good wife.” I returned the same smile he gave.
He laughed sarcastically, “Suit yourself,’’ he bent his head, “And see you next week in church.” He didn’t wait for my response before walking away.
Not long after I left the hotel, I located a pharmacy and treated my allergy. And I also received five hundred thousand dollars in my account before I went to bed.
I paid for the first three sessions of chemo my mother would have, bought her some necessities she would need while staying at the hospital, and upgraded her room to a vip room. I knew I was getting married on Saturday to a stranger, but that didn’t stop me from taking care of my mom and living freely during the week.
Daniel and Clara called me and asked me to move in with them on Wednesday, but I refused and told them I’d only be at their place on Friday, which I did.
To my surprise, Bridget already left the country, and would lay low for a year—according to her parents.

“You may now kiss the bride.” I was brought out of my thoughts, right after the officiator’s command.
I looked between myself and Alex, unsure of what to do.
Alex stepped closer, lowered his head, “Trust me, this is the last thing I want to do with you.” He whispered before his lips crashed on mine.
I felt nothing at that point, and desperately wished nothing would make me regret getting married to him.
We walked hand in hand down the aisle, away from the altar.
I spotted his grandfather who just kept grinning at me, which made me wonder if he actually loved Bridget a lot, or he’s happy because of what he’s gaining from the marriage.
“Congratulations.” Clara said, clapping her hands as we approached her and Daniel.
“Thank You.” We both said in unison.
“You don’t have to worry about coming home while you are married, stay with your husband and be good to him.” Daniel said, holding my hands like he meant his words.
“Don’t worry Father, I’ll do my best not to mess up,” I said, touching my head coyly.
We approached his parents, and exchanged pleasantries. I noticed his mother was not very pleased with me, while his father was just neutral.
We left for the reception, and there were a lot more people than I had expected, and it made me nervous. At the reception I felt like my teeth would fall off from smiling too much. Alex barely smiled at anyone, he said everyone there was present because of his parents and grandfather.
But while we were greeting the guest, we met two other men who looked very young; one would be in his mid 30, while the other would be around Alex’s age.
“Congratulations Mr and Mrs Jordan.” The man in his mid 30 greeted us as we approached them. And I nodded at him with a smile.
“Hey Alex, I don’t know if I should congratulate you or not.” The other guy said, and one part of me felt offended. So I glared at him.
“No offense, I’m not just a big fan of you.” He stated, not hiding the hate in his tone.
“Stop it Jonathan. You shouldn't ruin my day, right?” Alex nudged him, patting his shoulders. But I could tell Alex wasn’t offended by his remark at all.
“Who are they?” I asked Alex.
He pointed to Jonathan, and I used that opportunity to take a better look at him. His build is not that different from Alex’s, but he had brown eyes and an ivory tone skin.
“He’s Jonathan, my best friend.” Then he pointed to the other man, “And this is Mr John, a business partner. You’ll get to know him better soon.” He finished his introduction, smiling at them. I’ve never seen him smile like that before.
“Nice to meet you both.” I extended my hand for a handshake which only Mr John acknowledged. I guess Jonathan and Alex’s feelings about me were mutual.
“Will you be at the business award night with your wife?” John asked, facing Alex as he spoke.
“Yes, she’ll be coming with me.” Alex replied, without asking me about it.
“Are you sure about that?” Jonathan asked, looking at me with skeptical eyes.
“Yes, don’t worry about it. I sent you a document via email, can you review it and give your feedback before we leave?” Alex changed the subject swiftly.
“Okay.” Jonathan said, and Alex smiled at him before we started walking away from them.
“You know the fact that we are married doesn’t mean you get to drag me to whatever event you like, right?” I paused, turned and waited for his response.
“No, you don’t get to tell me you are not going to an event with me, especially an event where a date is required. You are my wife now, even though I hate to admit it.” He spat bitterly.
“Do you hate me that much?” I asked, wondering what Bridget could have done to not make him hate her.
“Why don’t you put a poll online and see if there’s any man out there in his right senses that wants you as a wife.”
“I could say the same about you.” I shot back.
He leaned closer and placed his mouth close to my ear.
“Based on how you’ve thrown your naked body at me before, I must say that’s rich coming from you.” He finished with a smirk. Damn Bridget. What exactly did she do with him in the past? I couldn’t even argue further with him.
“If it wasn’t on the news that I’m a failed billionaire, you’d have done anything to get into my pants, am I wrong?” I shook my head negatively at his question, before I realized I was saying he’s right, then I shook my head positively immediately.
He smirked, standing uprightly, “That only proves how much of a gold digger you are.” He finished off, and walked away.
I kept standing, pondering on his words, and I realized something at that point; Bridget is way more spoiled than I expected, and Alex—hates her gut, that he can’t stand to see her. And I also knew at that point, that I had signed out a year of my life to a man who won’t miss a chance to put me in my place.

It was almost two weeks since we got married. And we moved into a two bedroom apartment. The highlight of our wedding night was when Alex came to my bedroom with a document. He asked me to read and sign without complaining, so we can have a ‘smooth marriage’. I read the clauses on the prenuptial agreement contract;
1 Stay out of each other’s business during the marriage.
2 Respect each other; don’t be involved in any scandal.
3 Do not interfere in my business.
4 Whatever secret you discover in this marriage about me, would not be spoken of or spread on the net?
Breach of contract fee: $500,000,000
“WTF! Five million dollars?” I exclaimed, rushing out of my room.
“Wtf is going Alex? Do you have to put so much boundary between us? We can at least be friends till we divorce.” I regretted mentioning divorce.
“You are not even allowed to mention whatever you discover about me after you divorce me.” He deadpanned, not looking away from his laptop.
“This is not right.” I said, holding the document in the air.
“Coming from someone that was ready to divorce me before we got married.” He gave me a pointed look.
“And I hope you read the prenuptial agreement before the clauses?” He asked, returning his gaze back to his laptop.
“Yes.” I said, and I wonder why he would make a prenuptial contract when he had nothing to his name.
“In a few days time, you should go to a boutique and pick something to wear for the event we would be attending.” He said, taking the signed document from me. I nodded and went back to my room.
It was eventually time for me to go pick out a dress, and I was in the living room waiting for him to come out of the bathroom so I could tell him I was leaving when a call came in. It was the doctor.
“Hello, doctor.” I said, immediately I picked the call.
“Hi Gwen. I have bad news, but you have to be calm.” He said, and my heart started beating fast.
“And what could that be?’ I asked impatiently.
“Your mom was taken from the hospital by some men, we’ve involved the police but we have no lead so far.”
“What do you mean by that!?” I almost screamed, but I knew I had to keep it low incase Alex was out of the bathroom.
“You should come to the hospital first.” And with that, he hung up.
My heart started beating fast, and I was about to head towards Alex’s room to tell him I’d have to cancel our plan, when a text popped up on my phone screen.
Unknown: We have your mother Gwen.
