Cape Coast, Monday, 15 December 1873.This morning at six, as I was crossing the road to Grandpa Christian’s house, I saw that the Hausa police had started implementing the chiefs’ decree. They were patrolling the town in groups of four, seizing every man they found. The men swore at them in Fante but since the police didn’t understand the insults they paid no attention to them. I saw one man fight back. Two police grabbed him at his shoulders, and two at his ankles. They lifted him and ran with him down to the Castle yard. The children in the street, not understanding what was going on, thought it was a game and laughed and cheered. When they had cleared the streets, they started a house to house search.
