💭 Chapter 7 The Signal Below

737 Words
It was still dark when Minh arrived at the old gym. The school grounds were silent, the mist swirling around his feet as he approached the crumbling side entrance. He pushed the rusted door open slowly, its hinges groaning like a warning. Inside, the air was damp and heavy. Moonlight filtered through broken windows, casting long shadows across the abandoned basketball court. Near the far wall, two figures stood huddled beside a large object covered with a torn tarp. “Minh!” Linh waved him over, her eyes wide and excited. “You won’t believe what we found.” Hải pulled back the tarp dramatically, revealing what looked like a huge metallic console—half-buried in the cracked floor. It was covered in strange symbols, some of which glowed faintly in the dark. “Where did this come from?” Minh whispered. “We don’t know,” Hải replied. “But it wasn’t here before. Linh noticed it last night when she passed by after cram class. It was like… humming.” Minh stepped closer. The console seemed dormant now, but as he touched one of the symbols, a soft pulse ran through his fingers. “It reacts to you,” Linh said. “Just like it did with Lyra.” “Does she know about this?” “We haven’t told her yet,” Hải said. “We wanted you to see first.” Minh glanced around. “This looks like a receiver. A signal collector. Maybe even a communicator.” As if on cue, the console lit up with a low hum. Symbols danced across the surface, rearranging themselves rapidly. Then, a distorted voice echoed from within: “---DANGER--- THEY ARE HERE--- HIDE---” The voice cut off. Silence followed. Then footsteps. Someone was approaching. They quickly hid behind an old stack of bleachers as the side door creaked open again. Ms. Thủy entered, her expression unreadable. She moved directly toward the console as if she already knew it was there. Minh’s breath caught in his throat. Was she friend or foe? To their shock, Mr. Lộc entered right behind her. “You’re late,” Ms. Thủy said coldly. “I had to reroute the surveillance,” Mr. Lộc muttered. “They’re moving faster than we thought.” Ms. Thủy examined the symbols. “The warning’s been triggered. It means she’s in danger.” “She?” Mr. Lộc frowned. “You mean Lyra?” “Who else?” Ms. Thủy snapped. “Her presence activated the field. If the signal is this strong, they’re already close.” Linh’s hand trembled against Minh’s sleeve. He held it tightly. “This can’t be real,” Hải whispered. “They know about all of it?” Minh felt a wave of confusion and fear crash into him. Their teachers—trusted, ordinary—were part of something far bigger. “They’re guardians,” Linh said quietly, like solving a riddle. “Protectors of… beings like Lyra.” Suddenly, the console pulsed again. A new pattern formed—a glowing star map. One of the stars blinked red. “That’s the extraction point,” Ms. Thủy said. “We need to get her there. Tonight.” “If she refuses?” “She won’t. She’s starting to remember.” Then her gaze snapped toward the bleachers. “Come out,” she said firmly. The three students froze. Mr. Lộc sighed. “They’ve been listening the whole time.” Knowing they had no choice, Minh, Linh, and Hải stepped out slowly. To their surprise, neither teacher looked angry—just resigned. “You were bound to find out eventually,” Mr. Lộc said. “Why didn’t you tell us?” Minh asked, his voice cracking. “Why all the secrets?” “To protect you,” Ms. Thủy said gently. “Knowledge is dangerous when the wrong people are watching. And they always are.” Minh stared at the glowing map. “So Lyra isn’t just here for school.” “She’s here because this planet is at risk,” Mr. Lộc replied. “And she’s the only one who can stop what’s coming.” A pause. Linh stepped forward. “What can we do?” Ms. Thủy’s eyes softened. “You already are. But now, we need your help.” They all stared at the console as the red star blinked faster and faster. The countdown had begun.
