💭 Chapter 8 Escape Route

1137 Words
The red star on the console blinked faster and faster, casting a rhythmic glow across the dust-laden gym floor. Minh, Linh, and Hải stood frozen, overwhelmed by the whirlwind of revelations that had just swept them away. Ms. Thủy’s gaze moved to the star map, her jaw tightening. “We don’t have much time.” “What exactly are we supposed to do?” Hải asked, still breathless. “We’re just students.” “No one is just a student,” Mr. Lộc said. “Not anymore.” The console shifted its light pattern, now projecting a series of symbols that floated in midair. A narrow beam connected the blinking red star to another glowing blue one. Minh stepped closer, eyes scanning the symbols. “This is a route,” he said slowly. “A path. Like coordinates?” “Correct,” Ms. Thủy nodded. “It’s a portal alignment path. But it requires stabilization—something only Lyra can do.” “Then we need to tell her,” Linh said firmly. “Now.” But outside, trouble was already brewing. --- Lyra paced anxiously inside the empty classroom. Her senses were ringing—like pressure building just behind her eyes. Something had awakened. Something ancient and familiar. She looked down at her wrist where a faint glow pulsed beneath her skin—an alien mark she never remembered acquiring. The more time passed, the brighter it became. She didn’t need Minh or anyone else to tell her the truth anymore. It was inside her now. The door burst open. Minh, Linh, and Hải rushed in, breathless. “You found it, didn’t you?” Lyra asked before they could speak. Minh nodded. “And it spoke. It warned us.” “The device under the gym,” Linh added. “It’s a signal receiver—and a portal. The teachers are with us. They knew about you. They’re guardians.” Lyra blinked. “Guardians?” Mr. Lộc and Ms. Thủy entered quietly behind the students. “We’re here to protect you,” Mr. Lộc said gently. “But the time has come to act.” “There’s a portal,” Ms. Thủy explained. “A safe route that leads to the extraction point. But it can only open if you activate it. You have the imprint.” “I… I’m not sure I can,” Lyra murmured. “I don’t remember how.” “You don’t have to remember,” Minh said, stepping closer. “Just trust yourself. And trust us.” --- That night, the six of them gathered at the old gym again, now fully illuminated by the console’s pulsating light. Lyra stood in the center of the beam, the symbols surrounding her like stars in a miniature galaxy. She closed her eyes and reached inside. At first, there was only static—white noise in her mind. Then, a flicker. A memory. A voice. **“You are the Keeper. You must not forget.”** Her hands rose on their own. The symbols responded instantly, aligning, dancing, rotating in perfect synchronicity. The red and blue stars blinked, then merged into a golden vortex in the air above the console. The portal shimmered into existence. A breathtaking spiral of energy spun in midair, casting strange shadows on everyone’s faces. “We did it,” Hải breathed. But it was too soon to celebrate. A loud c***k echoed from the hallway outside. They weren’t alone anymore. --- Shadowy figures appeared in the doorway—humanoid but unnaturally tall, their faces hidden beneath silver helmets that shimmered like water. Their movements were smooth, synchronized, and utterly silent. Ms. Thủy cursed under her breath. “Trackers.” Lyra’s heart slammed against her ribs. “They found me.” “They must’ve been tracing the signal,” Mr. Lộc said. “Everyone, back!” The first Tracker raised a long metallic device, aiming it directly at the portal. A piercing beam of static shot out, causing the edges of the portal to flicker and distort. Lyra screamed, her knees buckling. Minh caught her before she fell. “Hold on! You have to stabilize it!” “I… I can’t!” she gasped. “It’s collapsing—!” Mr. Lộc stepped in front of them, raising his hand. With a pulse of energy from a small device hidden in his palm, he blasted one of the Trackers back into the hallway. Linh stared in shock. “You have alien tech?!” she gasped. Ms. Thủy smiled grimly. “We have a lot of things you don’t know about.” Another Tracker leaped forward—but Hải, thinking fast, swung a broken broomstick into its path. The makeshift weapon barely slowed it down, but it was enough for Minh and Linh to drag Lyra back toward the console. “Focus,” Minh whispered. “You don’t need to remember everything. Just remember who you are.” Lyra looked into his eyes. And something clicked. “I’m not human,” she said softly. “But I’m not alone.” She stood again. Her body straightened, and the markings on her arms blazed to life. She raised both hands and screamed—not in fear, but in **command**. The portal roared. Its edges solidified. The golden vortex expanded, stabilizing. The Trackers paused, as if sensing her strength. “I remember now,” Lyra said. “I’m not here to run. I’m here to finish what I started.” --- The Trackers began to back away. One of them turned and vanished in a shimmer of light—teleporting. “They’re retreating?” Hải asked. “No,” Mr. Lộc said grimly. “They’re regrouping.” “We need to move now,” Ms. Thủy urged. “Lyra, get through the portal. We’ll hold them off.” Lyra looked at her friends. “I’m not leaving without them.” “It’s not safe—” Mr. Lộc began. “We’re going,” Minh said. “All of us.” Lyra turned to the console. She pressed a glowing star-shaped symbol. Instantly, the portal shimmered and split—forming two exits instead of one. “One leads to safety,” she said. “The other leads to the core of the threat.” “We can end this,” Linh said. “We have to,” Hải agreed. “Otherwise it’ll follow us forever.” --- Together, they stepped forward. Lyra went first, her silhouette disappearing into the golden spiral. Minh followed, then Linh, then Hải. Mr. Lộc and Ms. Thủy exchanged one last glance. “We’ll find them,” she said. “Or they’ll find us.” Then they too stepped into the light. The portal blinked once—twice—then vanished. The gym fell silent. Only the dust remained.
