21 When the soldiers who returned from the field woke, their movements were slow. Those who had sustained injuries needed time to rest and heal. Travel and days with the highwaymen had been difficult on the refugees, especially the young ones. Marshall knew this, so he took advantage of the early hour and, he hoped, Leo’s unoccupied lair. Though he’d been in the tunnels numerous times and understood the system of whistles between guards and those traversing the dark tubes, he was grateful Leo had given him a room adjacent to the lair. The location would make it easier to converse with Leo and monitor visitors to and from the lair, but he wondered if Leo had his own reasons for keeping him close.
