Five: Road to Williamsburg – July 1863Captain Masengill led us on a dusty ride some ninety miles south of Camp Nelson through the baking sun. Rumor was that the Rebs were crossing over from Tennessee in droves making incursions to steal supplies and attack our telegraph lines making it difficult to get messages quickly to the boys about the Rebs whereabouts. Williamsburg was our destination but we stopped in London Tennessee where another hasty Union camp and supply depot was up and running. The order to dismount could not have come sooner and I was personally relieved to get down from Abigail. She snorted loudly when I got down and was clearly relived to no longer cart me on the trails.
