“There he goes!” I raised my rifle, aimed in, and pulled the trigger. The butt of the rifle kicked hard against my shoulder as fire and sparks lit the surroundings of the wood. A dull smack sounded noisily and the shadow fell hard to the ground. “Great shot!” Sergeant Loyod exclaimed. “Let's go pick'em up before his friends do.” We ran forward quickly approaching a dark lump lying flat on the ground. “Get a torch over here!” A bright fire bounced up and down through the woods until a Private carrying the torch could be clearly seen. I knelt and looked over the man while the torch lent its flickering light. The shot went right through the center of his back; a clean kill if I ever saw one. I turned his still body over to see the face of the merciless soldier I had killed only to be greeted
