La Dolce Far NienteI spent a fair amount of time the next day by myself. I woke up late, fixed a double espresso and took my coffee cup and a plate of fresh rolls and fruit out onto the loggia to relax in the mid-morning light and eat my breakfast. There was very little activity in the vineyard below, about the first time since my return to the estate that everything was so quiet. I lounged around, enjoying the calm moments away from the winery and its employees, and took my time showering and getting dressed. It reminded me of the Italian saying, “La dolce far niente.” Italians take a different view of their life and their world than do Americans. Italians are not at all lazy, but they believe that time to reflect and time to relax are necessary parts of life. La dolce far niente capture
