A Quiet EveningI returned to the villa after my long visit with Roberto and sat in the shade of the loggia for a while. After the quantity of wine we'd consumed, I didn't need any more to keep me company, so I just sat there with my feet propped up on another chair, and leaned my chin into my hand resting elbow-down on the table. The high heat of the afternoon had ebbed a bit as the hours wore on. It was around five o'clock when the workers began to trudge out of the fields and back to their old battered cars for the drive home, looking forward to the long, languishing supper and the short night's rest before beginning work again the next day.
