Chapter 6 - Settling In

943 Words
It was a few hours before I saw anyone, I hadn’t moved from my spot curled up in the arm chair, I had been working on a cross stitch that I planned on hanging above my bed. It would consist of a gathering of woodland creatures around a campfire, eventually. There was a knock at the door and a woman peeked her head around, “Luna? I am James’ mate Rachael, do you want help unpacking?” I put my project down and stand up. “Ah, pleased to meet you, please. I have quite a few books and- oh this room is stunning. Thank you for it.” She smiles and comes in, closing the door behind her. She looked to be in her late twenties with curly black hair and fair skin.  “I had hoped you would like it. Every woman needs a space to be herself. He told me that you are a student? I thought you would appreciate a desk with a nice view.” She motions out of the window in front of the desk. Rolling hills framed a beautiful lake and fields. I let go of the breath I had apparently been holding since she spoke.  “It’s stunning… I don’t think I will ever get tired of it. Is that all the Ice Moon territory?” I head for the balcony door, stepping out into the sunshine. Rachael follows, nodding before answering. “It’s where we work, almost all of the food we eat we grow ourselves, and the tools and buildings we build. I think you’ll fit in nicely.” I hum an answer and stare out at the water for a few moments. “What is the Alpha like? I only know what I have heard in stories, he seemed very… business like when I met him, except for the first moment of course. It was like, we both realised and then nothing. Back to business.” Rachael frowned, looking like she wanted to feel sorry for me.  “He is exactly that, extremely business focused. But he does it all for us, for the sake of the pack. Ever since he took over from his father a few years ago he has done nothing but work to improve what he can, to expand and give his pack the best chances of life they can get. I suppose he does work himself too hard,” She sighs a bit, leaning on the side of the balcony, “But he is a good man, I hope you don’t think anything different because of how he has treated you so far. He’s probably just nervous dear, he’s never even had a girlfriend before.”  I turn to look at her, furrowing my brow. “He’s never had a girlfriend?” She shakes her head, giving a small laugh. “No, he’s always been too busy. Now let’s get you unpacked.” It didn’t take long to unpack with Rachael’s help, and once we were done she took me downstairs to get food. A few stared as we entered the kitchen, even more whispered to each other. Rachael cleared her throat, “This is your Luna, her name is Freya. She’s a medical student at the nearby university. Now let's get you some food, I think it’s stir fry for dinner tonight.” I nod and follow her to the breakfast bar and shortly after a bowl of food was placed in front of me. My stomach rumbled at the smell of it, I hadn’t eaten anything since early that morning, so it didn’t take me long to tuck in.  “You’re from the Crystal Pack, right?” I looked up to the voice, a girl around seventeen was standing in front of me, I nod and swallow the food in my mouth. She was pretty, with long blonde hair and brown eyes. “I’m Freya, it’s nice to meet you, ah…?” I reach out a hand to shake hers. She ignores it and replies. “Abbie, but everyone knows that. You seem a little old to have only just met your mate, don’t you?” Oh great, a snarky teenager, I sigh internally. “And you seem a little young to be judging so heavily. You find your mate when you are destined to, when the Moon Goddess deems it right. I hope you find yours when the time is right too.” I give her a smile, and flip her off in my mind. Abbie simply huffs and walks away. Rachael leaned over to whisper in my ear, “She was planning on being the Alpha’s mate herself, I think she’s jealous of you.” I chuckled, stirring my food. “There’s always one, isn't there? That thinks it will be them. She’s probably been steaming away in her anger all day, a little bookworm coming in to steal her spot.” Rachael laughs, as do a couple of others sitting nearby.  “Almost certainly,” Said an amused older male voice, I turned around to see a grey haired man in a button up shirt, he had a stethoscope around his neck. “I’m Samuel, the pack doctor. You must be Freya, our new Luna. Whispers in the air tell me that you’re a medical student.” I quickly put down my cutlery and spun in the chair to face him, nodding eagerly. “That is correct, it’s a pleasure to meet-” “The Alpha’s back,” Rachael quickly cut in. I looked up to the door to see Andrew and his inner circle enter the pack house. His eyes flickered to me for a half second, but he continued on up the stairs. He looked so concerned about something… Isolde whimpered in my head, desperate to go and comfort him. Rachael rested her hand on my shoulder, “It must be the rogues… best not to bother him dear. Take tonight to get settled in.”  I nodded and hoped that coming here wasn’t a mistake.
