Round Nine (Mensah)

666 Words
The bell rang. Round nine began, and both men came to the center of the ring carrying twenty-seven minutes of accumulated fatigue between them. Mensah's territory now, entirely unfamiliar, no professional fight of his career having ever asked this much of him before. Zed could see it in the way Mensah's chest rose and fell, deeper breaths than earlier rounds, the honest cost of a body drawing on reserves it had never needed to draw on before. Zed's own body carried its own weight the ribs, the accumulated marks along his guard, the specific heaviness that settled into legs this deep into a championship distance fight. But his mind stayed clear, and the tell, worn into his reading now through eight full rounds of confirmation, felt as familiar as anything he'd built in eighteen weeks of camp. Mensah opened cautiously, working behind a jab that had lost some of its early snap, testing whether Zed's fatigue matched his own. Zed answered in kind, both men circling, the round's opening minute unfolding slower than any before it, both fighters clearly managing themselves as carefully as they managed each other. Around the forty-second mark, Mensah found something, a combination thrown with real conviction despite the fatigue, three punches that caught Zed by surprise with their sharpness given everything the fight had already taken from both men. Two landed clean, catching Zed on the guard and cheek, a reminder that Mensah's danger hadn't disappeared simply because the fight had tilted. Zed absorbed it, reset his feet, and answered with his own jab, buying himself room rather than trying to match aggression with aggression this deep into the fight. Around the ninety-second mark, the shoulder tell appeared again, slower now, more labored, the honest fatigue of nine rounds making the habit even harder for Mensah to fully suppress. Zed moved with it, the counter hook missing clean for the ninth time, and his own follow-up landed, a right hand catching Mensah's jaw with what remained of his own conditioning behind it. Mensah's head snapped back, his legs stuttering half a step before catching themselves, sixteen no, four years of Ansah's discipline still holding even through visible fatigue. Zed pressed carefully, two more punches, both partially blocked as Mensah's guard reasserted itself. No knockdown. But another clear mark on a fight that had shifted decisively since round four. The final thirty seconds saw both men working cautiously, each aware of how much remained and how costly a mistake would be this deep into a fight neither had fully settled. Mensah circled, protecting himself, conserving whatever he had left for the rounds still ahead. Zed matched him, unwilling to gift anything back after everything the last several rounds had earned. The bell rang to end round nine. Zed walked back to the corner, breathing hard, legs unsteady in a way they hadn't been even after round eight. "Talk to me," Darnell said. "He's hurt but he's not gone," Zed said. "Found a rhythm for a minute there. Caught me clean twice. I answered with the tell again. Ninth time. Right hand landed." Darnell worked fast, water, towel, checking Zed's legs, his breathing. "How do you feel," Darnell asked. "Heavy," Zed said honestly. "Everything feels heavy." "That's nine rounds," Darnell said. "Everyone's tired right now, him more than you, based on what I'm seeing. The question is whether you can keep doing what's working for three more rounds." He looked at Zed steadily. "Three rounds left," Darnell said. "You've built for this. Trust it." The ten-second warning sounded. Darnell pulled the stool back, leaned in one final time. "Same Tuesday," he said. "Same Tuesday," Zed answered. He stood, mouthguard back in, legs finding whatever was left in them. Across the ring, Mensah rose slowly, Ansah's hands moving urgently as he spoke, the calm trainer from the weigh-in now fully replaced by a man fighting to hold his fighter's composure together through the hardest rounds of his career. The bell rang. Round ten began.
