Round Two (Contreras)

2427 Words
Contreras came out of his corner for round two the same way he had started round one. No adjustment. No new information gathered from the first three minutes. Just forward pressure, the same relentless closing of distance that had defined him across twenty-five professional fights and that no opponent in those fights had found a way to permanently stop. Zed read it in the first five seconds. Contreras was not a man who changed plans between rounds. He had one plan. He believed in it completely. He had been right to believe in it twenty-three times out of twenty-five. The plan was simple. Come forward. Land more than you absorb. Make the other man decide whether he wants to keep standing in front of you. Zed moved right immediately, denying the straight line Contreras wanted, making him turn to track before he had closed the distance he expected to close in the first ten seconds. The turn cost a step. Small. But present. Zed filed it. The first forty-five seconds of round two were a continuation of the round one pattern. Contreras pressing. Zed moving at angles. Both men landing in small numbers without either producing the kind of clean shot that changed what the fight was. Then Contreras changed something. Not dramatically. Not a full approach switch. He stopped throwing to the body and went upstairs. Three consecutive head shots in the forty-fifth second. Jab, right hand, left hook. The combination arrived faster than the body work had arrived in round one because the upstairs distance was shorter and the load was lighter. The jab and the right hand caught Zed's guard. The left hook slipped the guard and caught him on the jaw. Clean. The first clean head shot Contreras had landed. Zed moved right and reset. His legs were solid. The shot had registered but not compromised anything structural. He looked at Contreras. The forward pressure was still there. But something in Contreras's eyes had updated. He had found the upstairs combination worked better than the body approach. He was going to use it again. Zed filed it. At the sixty-second mark Contreras threw the same three-punch sequence. Jab, right hand, left hook. This time Zed was ready for it. He had spent the fifteen seconds after the first sequence recalibrating his guard to make the left hook more expensive. The jab landed on the guard. The right hand landed on the guard. The left hook found the guard raised at the angle that made it glance rather than land clean. Contreras reset. He had expected the left hook to land the same way it had the first time. It hadn't. His eyes recalibrated. Zed answered in the space the recalibration created. Counter right hand off the back foot. Darnell's shot. The one drilled into the preparation from the first week. It landed on Contreras's cheekbone. Contreras's head moved. He kept coming. But the recalibration was in his eyes and the counter right hand was now information he had to account for. The push forward cost something it hadn't cost in round one. Midway through round two Darnell's voice lived in Zed's feet the way it always did in the middle rounds. Don't get pulled into trading. Make him fight your fight instead of his. Zed moved. He circled. He made Contreras turn and track and cover ground before closing distance, which reduced the force behind every shot Contreras landed because he was slightly extended, slightly off-balance from the tracking, when each punch arrived. Not dramatically. But cumulatively. A punch thrown when slightly extended carried less. A punch absorbed when the receiver was moving at an angle landed on less stable ground but also found less stable target. The physics of the angle work compounding across a round. Priya had shown this in the preparation analysis. A pressure fighter's output rate held steady across rounds because the forward motion generated momentum that the punches rode. Denial of the straight line denied the momentum. Reduction of the momentum reduced the effective force even when the punches still landed. Zed was not going to stop Contreras coming forward. He was going to make the forward motion work harder for less return. At the ninety-second mark he let Contreras close distance and threw the counter right hand again from inside. Different entry angle from the first one. Same location on Contreras's cheekbone. Contreras's legs moved a half step. He covered and pressed and the clinch happened. The official separated them. Reset. Contreras looked at him. The eyes had recalibrated again. Two counter right hands from different angles to the same location. He was updating his defensive read on the right hand. Which meant his attention was on the right side. Which meant the left side of his guard was getting slightly less attention. Zed filed it. He did not use it in round two. The round was still early in the fight. Six rounds remained after this one. A discovery in round two was worth more in round five when Contreras was managing everything he had already found and the left side being less attended was compounded by everything else that had accumulated. He banked it. The round ended with both men having scored. Neither having hurt the other significantly. But the fight had information in it now that round one hadn't had. Zed walked back to the corner. Darnell had the stool ready. He worked fast. Water. Towel. Check on the jaw where the round one left hook had landed. Satisfied. "Counter right hand twice," Darnell said. "Same location. Different angle." "Yes," Zed said. "He's updating the right side defense," Darnell said. "Yes," Zed said. "Left side is getting less." Darnell looked at him. "You're not using it yet," Darnell said. "No," Zed said. "Good," Darnell said. "What round." Zed thought about the fight so far. About what Contreras was building. About what the accumulation looked like if two more rounds went the same way. "Round five," he said. "If the right hand keeps pulling his attention right." Darnell nodded. "Three more rounds of the counter right hand from different angles," he said. "Keep the location consistent. Keep the angle different. Make him update the right side defense three more times before you go left." Zed drank water. "The body," Darnell said. "He went upstairs in round two. Body is open more than it was." "I know," Zed said. "Mix it in," Darnell said. "Not as the primary. As the information. Let him know the body is still present so he can't fully commit the right side defense without also managing the body." Three things for Contreras to manage. The counter right hand. The body work. The round five left side when the right side defense had pulled too far right. Zed looked at the ring. He thought about what Kwame had said in the preparation about Contreras's response to being hurt. He presses harder. When most fighters absorbed a clean shot and reset, Contreras's response was to increase the forward pressure. Not from anger. From belief. He had won twenty-three of twenty-five fights by pressing harder when hurt and his body believed in the strategy completely. Which meant if the left side shot landed cleanly in round five Contreras was going to come back with increased pressure. Which meant round five was going to be the hardest round of the fight. Zed thought about Darius's conditioning numbers. The twelve-round output consistency. Round five was well inside the range. He could answer the increased pressure. "Hard rounds coming," Darnell said. Reading him without being told. "I know," Zed said. "The preparation built for the hard rounds," Darnell said. "I know," Zed said. The ten-second warning. Darnell pulled the stool back. He leaned in. "Same Tuesday," he said. "Same Tuesday," Zed said. He stood. He looked across the ring. Contreras was already on his feet. Already moving. The impatience of a pressure fighter between rounds was real and visible and produced a specific forward energy the moment the bell released him. The bell rang. ROUND THREE. Contreras opened with the upstairs combination again. Three punches. Jab, right hand, left hook. The left hook was the primary. His eyes said so before he threw it. A specific narrowing that Priya hadn't found in the tape analysis because it was too small for the camera at distance. From inside the ring it was visible. Zed moved right on the left hook. It found shoulder rather than jaw. He answered with the counter right hand from a third angle, slightly more inside than the first two, arriving from closer range with less extension but more precision. It landed on the cheekbone again. Same spot. Third time. Contreras shook his head once. Not from pain. From the accumulation. Three counter right hands to the same location were starting to be felt even when individually none of them was a significant punch. The cumulative math of the same location three times was different from three different locations. He pressed harder. As expected. The forward pressure increased in the middle of round three in a way that was measurably different from rounds one and two. Zed gave ground at angles and absorbed and answered and moved. He threw the body shot once in round three. Left hook to the body, short, inside distance, the same feint and angle as the Wren fight, the same mechanics that had accumulated over twelve fights before this one. It landed. Contreras's cover came down on the body side. Head open. Zed did not go upstairs. He stepped back and reset. He was telling Contreras the body was still a threat without spending the information advantage of the right guard attending to the right hand and the left side getting less. Round three ended with Zed having added the body work to the picture Contreras was managing. Three things. Counter right hand. Body. Round five left side pending. Contreras was managing three things in round three that he hadn't been managing in round one. The accumulation of management cost was invisible to the crowd. It was present in the ring. Corner. "Body once," Darnell said. "Once," Zed said. "Landed. He covered." "Head was open," Darnell said. "Saved it," Zed said. Darnell looked at him. "He's managing three things," Zed said. "I know," Darnell said. "Keep the same pattern in round four. Counter right, body once, no left side yet. Let the management cost build one more round." "Round five," Zed said. "Round five," Darnell said. He pressed two fingers along Zed's ribs where Contreras had landed the body shot in round one. Still tender. Managing. Not compromising. "The pressure increased in round three," Zed said. "I saw it," Darnell said. "Round five it increases more," Zed said. "When the left side lands." "Yes," Darnell said. "The conditioning holds," Zed said. It was not a question. "The numbers say yes," Darnell said. "Darius's numbers don't lie." "And if the numbers are wrong," Zed said. "They're not," Darnell said simply. He said it with the same weight he attached to facts. Not hope. Fact. "Okay," Zed said. The ten-second warning. "Same Tuesday," Darnell said. "Same Tuesday," Zed answered. He stood. The bell rang. Round four was in front of him. Same pattern. Counter right hand from a fourth angle this time. Body once. No left side yet. One more round of cost building before he spent what he had found. He came out of the corner and moved right immediately and Contreras closed distance and the fight continued. Round by round. Tuesday by Tuesday. The same man. ROUND FOUR. The counter right hand landed from a fourth angle at the forty-second mark. Same cheekbone. Contreras's response was what it had been in round three. He pressed harder. His combinations came with more commitment in round four than in any previous round. The forward pressure was at its heaviest since the opening bell of round one. Zed absorbed and moved and answered. The body shot landed at the ninety-second mark. Same location. Contreras's cover came down on the body side. Head open. Zed stepped back. Contreras reset. He was managing everything now. Counter right hand. Body threat. Left side getting less attention. His eyes in round four were different from round one. Not worried. Working harder. The specific look of a man who came to fight one fight and was fighting a different one. The counter right hand had done that. Four rounds of it from four different angles landing on the same cheekbone location. The management of it had pulled his defensive attention so far right that the left side of his guard was at its least attended point since the opening bell. Round four ended. Zed sat down in the corner and Darnell worked fast. "Round five," Darnell said. "Round five," Zed confirmed. "Left side," Darnell said. "When the counter right hand has pulled the defense right. The left hook to the jaw from the inside angle." "Yes," Zed said. "Once to establish it," Darnell said. "See what it produces. Then decide whether it's the finish or the setup for the late rounds." Zed drank water. "He's going to come back hard," Zed said. "When it lands," Darnell said. "Yes. He's going to press harder than any previous round." "I answer it," Zed said. "You answer it," Darnell said. "The conditioning holds," Zed said. "The conditioning holds," Darnell said. The ten-second warning. Darnell pulled the stool back. One final look. "This is what twenty weeks was for," he said. "I know," Zed said. "Same Tuesday," he said. "Same Tuesday," Zed answered. He stood. He looked across the ring. Contreras was on his feet. Forward energy already building behind the ropes. The impatience of a man who had been absorbing a counter right hand to the same location for four rounds and was ready to make the fifth round mean something different. He was going to come out hard. He was going to come out harder than any previous round. Zed had prepared for exactly this round for twenty weeks. The bell rang. Round five. He came out of the corner moving right. The counter right hand from the angle Contreras was not protecting. Then the body once. Then when the defense pulled hard right. The left side. He moved into round five the way he had moved into every round of every fight since the parking lot. With everything built behind him. And the room in front of him. Ready to give him what it was going to give.
