Chapter 4-Meeting Kael

1394 Words
Jean's POV... Stacey and I ran through the woods, heading for our house, ignoring what the warrior said about staying safe. Our wolves sprinted through the woods and at that moment, I felt completely free. We arrived at our house and it was ruined. There was smoke coming out from it. We shifted back and went inside. "They're gone," I muttered. The door was dangling on one hinge. The furniture was broken and scattered everywhere. I gasped when my feet touched something on the floor. Blood??? Before I could blink, everywhere vanished and darkened. When I opened my eyes, I was in an open field and there were dead wolves everywhere. I stared at my palms, they were covered in blood, but it wasn't mine. Where was I? "Jean?" I looked up when I heard the voice. It belonged to mom. "Mom?" I called and started moving in the direction I heard the voice. "Jean, you have to hide," she said again. "Mom, dad. Where are you?" I asked, anxious, still running around, looking for them. "Don't let them know. You have to hide," "Where are you?" I screamed. I shivered when I felt something touch my leg. I looked down and saw a woman covered in blood... that was Vera? "Monster," she said weakly. "Where is it?" I asked, trying to squat. She looked at me weakly and helplessly. "You are," she said and passed out. "Monster," the voices rang in my head, multiple times. I covered my ears to muffle the voices and let out a loud, piercing scream. I woke up the next minute in my bed, panting. Trickles of sweat ran down my face. I quickly wrapped my hands over my body, shivering from what I saw. Stacey came running into my room. "Are you okay?" She asked as she sat down on the bed. "I heard you scream," she said, wiping off the sweat from my face. "Mom and dad," I paused and looked around for any sign of them. "Are they back?" She shook her head. "No," she paused. "What happened to you? We were here and then the next minute, you just blanked out. I had been trying to snap you out for it. It seemed like your soul left your body. What happened?" "I don't know," I said shakily. "But I saw mom and dad... and they said we should hide," She looked at me skeptically. "You must have had a seizure and started seeing things," "Well," she said as she stood up. "Since you're awake now, get ready, we leave at lights out," "What?" I muttered, sitting up. "We're going after them," "That's too risky," I added. "They asked us to hide," "I'm not going to run and hide like a coward and do nothing. I'm finding them and bringing them back," she said with determination. "I'm coming with you," "Of course you are. We'll go together. Start packing. It could be a long journey," she added and left. I watched her leave. I had never seen this side of her. Just this morning, she was as sweet as an angel, now, she was like a warrior Luna, getting ready for battle. ************* We snuck out of our territory as soon as the lights went out and approached the Alpha's mansion. "What are we doing here?" I whispered. "We're supposed to be going and not stopping here. We could get caught," "I know. I know. We just need to get something first" she said. "Here, hold this," she handed me her torch. "Be on the look out, if anything seems off, whistle and run. Got it?" I nodded. She started moving. I could only see her shadow, but after a few seconds, I didn't see anything again. I waited for what felt like eternity before I heard footsteps. I whistled as quietly as I could and wanted to run before I heard her voice. "Don't run. It's me," she said as she came out. "What did you get?" "This," she said. "Our ticket to lesser punishment in case we get caught," "Ohh," I nodded as I understood. "This way, even if we get caught in the woods for disobeying the Alpha's orders, we can lessen our punishments by claiming he granted us passes," "Genius," I smiled. "Okay, let's go," she said and took back her torch. We reached the borders and before we crossed, I turned back and took one last look at it, our pack. The place I was born and also executed at. I'll definitely see that it ends differently this time no matter how much the past changed. _____________ "I feel so cold," I said, putting my arms around my body. "I didn't expect it to be this cold out here," Stacey said, her teeth chattering. The moon was out so it wasn't difficult to see her face. "You seem so sure and confident in finding them. I can't really put my hands on it, but there's something you know," She sighed. "A large tree that has stood for hundreds of generations just got burnt in less than a minute and then, they claimed we got attacked," She scoffed. "I don't know how much coincidence works, but I'm not convinced this is a coincidence at all. Something's fishy. I'm yet to find out," I didn't bother pressing. She definitely knew something to have suspected something in the first place. It's better I let her figure things out. "We should shift. The cold is becoming unbearable," she said and I heard the crackling of bones, before she shifted. I shifted as well. The cold became less, but not entirely gone. We needed to move fast out of the woods. The memory of the oak tree burning returned. Did it do that and if I did... how? 'Did you hear that?' Stacey asked through the mind link. 'Hear what?' 'A howl' My wolf shook its head. I tried stretching my hearing, but I heard nothing. 'I hear it again' she growled and stopped moving. 'Why are you stopping?' I asked. 'I can't go on. Strangely, I'm submitting to the howl," I sat on my hind limbs. 'It's a cry for help and I can't disregard that. I need to find out what it is,' 'What if it's a trap?' She wasn't listening anymore. She had already started moving in another direction, probably where she heard the howl. I rolled my eyes. We got to a spot and I could perceive something burning. Laying In front of us was the large tree that had burnt to the ground. It extended as far as further into the woods. 'This must be a very long tree. I can't even see the end,' I said. She just growled in response. 'We're close,' she said. My wolf breathed in relief. We got closer and I saw it. A wolf was stuck and buried in the middle of the tree. Its eyes lit up as soon as it saw us. Stacey didn't hesitate to grab its fore limbs to drag him out, but it didn't work. I shifted immediately and moved towards her. "We can't help him this way. You need to shift" She looked at me, then at the wolf before lowering her head and shifting. I held his limbs while Stacey went to lift the tree a bit for him to crawl out. The tree was burnt already, so it wasn't difficult to lift, though she struggled with it but ended up moving it aside slightly. The wolf crawled out as I dragged it out. As soon as it came out, it snuggled up to me and placed its head on my lap. It whimpered when I rubbed its fur. "It's okay. It's okay," I whispered. "He's injured," Stacey said, looking at his hind limbs that were buried under the tree earlier. "Can you heal, big guy?" I asked the wolf. It looked so helpless as it whimpered and shook its head. "You need to shift. We can help you better that way," I added. It howled softly and shifted, whimpering because of the injury. His human form came into view under the moonlight. His toned body was the first thing to grab my attention as my gaze travelled up his body... then his face. He was smiling at me. Wait... it couldn't be. I just rescued Kael?
