Jean's POV...
I stared at him in disgust and disbelief. Was I actually drooling over him just now?
I stood up immediately, looking away.
Wait... I was naked.
Uhhh... I groaned. How could this be happening?
"Alpha?" Stacey said.
"No no. No," he waved his hands. "Don't call me that. I'm yet to be crowned alpha king. It's still two moons away. Let's just skip the formality for now,"
"I'm Kael," he said, extending his hand for a shake.
I glared at him, then at his hands, then back at his face. He was smiling at me.
I felt like smacking his face and ridding it of that smile.
"I'm Jean," I replied, but didn't take his hands.
Stacey hurried to my side and whispered. "That's the Alpha. Don't be rude,"
"No, it's fine," he said. "Thanks for helping me out. I had been there for a long time,"
"That was why my wolf succumbed to your howl," Stacey said. "What were you doing here anyways Alpha... I mean," she muttered. "Kael?"
"I was actually hunting with my friends. Though I would have been back earlier but I kind of delayed a bit. I wanted out from all the troubles and pressure from the Royal family, so I stayed a bit longer. Unfortunately, before I could escape the tree, it fell on me,"
"What about your friends?" Stacey asked again. I glared at her this time. We needed to continue our rescue mission and not be here talking to him.
"I guess they must be looking for me," he sighed.
"Thanks for helping me," he appreciated again.
I watched as he smiled while speaking. I scoffed. What an act.
I moved towards our bag on the floor and brought a pair of jeans and top and moved behind a tree and put them on.
"So, where are you two ladies going this late?"
"Um..." Stacey scratched the back of her head.
"That's not something you should bother yourself with. We've rescued you, so you can as well go about your Alpha king duties,"
There was silence, before he spoke.
"I want to help," he volunteered.
"You do?" I asked.
"Yes. I want to help my saviours with whatever they are doing. That's my little way of saying thank you," he continued. "When we get back to the pack, I'll make sure you're both rewarded handsomely,"
"Thank you Kael, but we don't want to be a bother. We don't want any attention," Stacey said.
He nodded. "Oh I see" he said knowingly. "You both left without permission and don't want trouble,"
"No. No. It's not that. We uh..." Stacey muttered.
"It's fine," he chuckled. "I'm not going to tell on you. Besides, I left without permission too,"
I rolled my eyes and started moving.
"So what do you say? Can I join your little group of two?"
"Sure then," Stacey said with a smile.
"No," I said, turning around.
I glared at Stacey, but said nothing and kept moving. Stacey ran up to meet me.
"Sorry about that, but we need him," she said.
"How exactly do we need him?" I stopped and folded my arms over my chest.
"We need to be nice to him and do what he wants, or he could actually see to it that we're punished when we return," she said.
I stared at her for a minute and sighed.
"He sure is good at punishing people," I muttered.
"What did you say?"
"Nothing. Let's just go,"
We kept on moving, and the further we went, the lesser the fog. It was disappearing. We were approaching the end of the woods.
"So," I started, tagging along with Stacey. "Where are we going? What's the plan?"
"Once we leave the woods, then we ask directions,"
"Directions to where and who will you ask?"
"Don't worry," she tapped my shoulders lightly. "I know someone I can ask. He's a friend of my mom's,"
"Oh," I murmured.
Just then, we heard a groan and we both turned around to see Kael, touching his leg, where he was injured.
Stacey went to him.
"What's the matter?"
"I think it's getting infected and it's getting more painful to walk,"
"And your wolf is too weak to heal," she said.
He shook his head. "No. My wolf is never too weak. I'm the weak one,"
"What?" My head snapped up and I watched him, taking a closer look at him.
Kael was never weak all the while we were together. He was the bravest and strongest man in our pack and in all of the Northern and southern wolf kingdom.
He had never appeared to be weak. Or was he at some point... but I didn't see it.
"Let's just take a break," I said. "Let's wait till morning to continue," I added, dropping the bag and bringing out the blanket.
We came with two blankets, and I knew instantly what Stacey was going to do.
She scooted over.
"I know what you're going to say, so just take and give to him. We'll both share," I said.
She laughed and took it from me.
I spread the blanket near a tree, under its branches and laid down. The moon was our source of light. Neither of us could make a fire.
Stacey came back and laid next to me.
I raised my head and looked at him. He was facing the other side, so I couldn't see his face.
Why didn't we feel the mate bond and we didn't smell each other.
Could it be that this time around, he wasn't my mate anymore?
***********
The chirping of the birds rang in my ears as I stirred.
I didn't want to wake up, not yet. I wanted to sleep some more.
Suddenly, someone started shaking me.
"Wake up Jean,"
"Hmm," I stretched, opening my eyes. "What's it?"
"He's gone," she said, pointing at his blanket.
"What?" I sat up. "He left us after we helped him?"
"I think we need to leave immediately. Someone could see us now..."
We heard footsteps. Not just one person... more than three.
"He ran his mouth and now the warriors are here to take us," I snarled, anger burning in me, making me despise him more.
"Let's run,"
Stacey said, holding my hand and pulling me away from the blanket.
Before we could even start running...
"Hold it there, Jean Vale,"
I froze.
