The sterile white lights of the private clinic hummed overhead, but Adrian’s presence made the room feel like a freezer. He stood by the window, his back to Evelyn, his phone pressed to his ear as he issued rapid, lethal commands to his security team.
Evelyn sat on the edge of the plastic chair in the hallway, her hands trembling in her lap. She had just watched her son being wheeled into a secure recovery room, hooked up to monitors, guarded by two massive men in suits. She hadn't been allowed to go in with him.
Adrian hung up the phone and turned around. His dark eyes were like chips of black ice. He didn't look like a relieved father; he looked like a general preparing for a m******e.
"Who packed his bag this morning, Evelyn?" Adrian asked. His voice was dangerously quiet, devoid of any emotion.
Evelyn swallowed hard. "I... I didn't. Mrs. Higgins packed it. I was in the shower."
Adrian’s jaw clenched. He took a step toward her, his towering frame casting a long, intimidating shadow. "You let a stranger pack your son's food. You let a woman you’ve known for two days feed him, without checking the ingredients yourself."
"I trusted her! You hired her!" Evelyn shot back, her fear giving way to defensive anger.
"You trusted her because you are naive," Adrian snapped, his voice cracking like a whip. "You spent four years hiding in a bubble, Evelyn. You don't know how the real world works. People lie. People scheme. And because of your blind trust, my son is currently fighting for his life in a hospital bed."
Evelyn flinched as if he had slapped her. Tears pricked her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. "Is he going to be okay?"
"He will be," Adrian said coldly. "But you will not see him until I say so. James will take you back to the penthouse. You will stay there. You will not leave the premises, you will not use the internet, and you will not contact anyone. You are a liability, Evelyn. And I don't leave liabilities unprotected."
Before she could protest, he turned on his heel and walked toward the elevators. "Drive," he barked at James, who was waiting by the car.

The ride back to the Blackwood Tower was suffocating. When they arrived, the building was on total lockdown. Security guards were stationed at every exit, checking IDs. Adrian marched through the lobby, Evelyn trailing behind him, his footsteps echoing like gunshots.
He didn't take her to the penthouse. He took her straight to the boardroom on the top floor.
When the heavy glass doors swung open, Victoria Blackwood was sitting at the head of the table, sipping a cup of tea, looking entirely unbothered.
"Adrian," she said smoothly. "I heard about the little medical scare. How is the boy?"
Adrian didn't sit down. He walked straight to her, slamming a thick manila folder onto the table. The tea in her cup rippled.
"Don't play games, Mother," Adrian snarled, his voice dripping with venom. "We found the IP address that sent the leak to the press. It came from your private tablet. You leaked the DNA test. You told the media my son is a fraud."
Victoria’s eyes narrowed, but she didn't deny it. "I did what was necessary. That woman is a gold-digger, Adrian. She trapped you. I was protecting the Blackwood legacy."
"You endangered my heir!" Adrian roared, the sound shaking the glass walls. Evelyn shrank back against the door. She had never seen him this furious. "If Leo had died today because of the chaos you caused, I would have buried you with my own hands."
Victoria paled, her teacup rattling against the saucer. "Adrian, you can't mean that. I'm your mother."
"As of this morning, you are no longer on the board of directors," Adrian said, his voice dropping to a deadly, final register. "I have transferred your shares to a blind trust. You are cut off from the company, cut off from the family accounts, and if you ever come within a mile of my son again, I will have you arrested for corporate espionage and child endangerment. Get out of my building."
Victoria stood up, her face pale and trembling with rage. She glared at Evelyn. "You did this. You turned him against me."
"Leave!" Adrian barked. Victoria grabbed her purse and stormed out, the doors slamming behind her.

Adrian rubbed his temples, taking a deep breath. He turned to Marcus, his Head of Security, who was standing in the corner. "Tell me you have the nanny."
"We do, sir," Marcus said, stepping forward. He gestured to the door. Two guards walked in, dragging a struggling Mrs. Higgins between them. Her pristine uniform was disheveled, her face pale with terror.
"Mr. Blackwood, please!" Mrs. Higgins cried out. "I didn't know! I swear I didn't know!"
Adrian walked slowly toward her, his eyes dark and terrifying. "You prepared his granola bar this morning, Mrs. Higgins. The toxicology report showed a heavy sedative mixed into the peanut butter. Who paid you?"
Mrs. Higgins sobbed, her knees buckling. "It was... it was Mr. Sterling. Richard Sterling. He paid me fifty thousand dollars to make the child sick. Just sick enough to keep you distracted so you would miss the Tokyo merger deadline. I didn't know he was allergic! I swear!"
Adrian’s face went completely still. Richard Sterling was his biggest rival in the corporate world.
"Take her to the police," Adrian said, his voice hollow and cold. "Hand over the evidence. Let the law deal with her."
As the guards dragged the weeping nanny away, Adrian turned to Evelyn. She was staring at him, her eyes wide with shock and horror.
"Richard Sterling," Evelyn whispered. "He tried to poison Leo just to win a business deal?"
"He tried to use my son as a pawn," Adrian corrected, stepping closer to her. He reached out, his fingers gripping her chin, forcing her to look into his ruthless eyes. "And do you know why he was able to get to him? Because you were too weak to protect him. Because you let a stranger into his life."
"I didn't know," Evelyn choked out, tears finally spilling over. "Adrian, please, I didn't know."
"Ignorance is not an excuse in my world, Evelyn," he said, his thumb wiping away a tear, but his touch was hard, unyielding. "You wanted to be a mother? You wanted to raise him? You failed. From now on, you don't make a single decision regarding his safety. You don't choose his food, you don't choose his clothes, and you certainly don't choose who watches him."
He released her chin and stepped back, adjusting his cuffs. "You are confined to the penthouse. You will have a new security detail. You will not leave unless I am with you. You wanted to hide from me for four years? Now, you will never be out of my sight again. Not for a single second."

Evelyn didn't fight him. She was too broken, too terrified. James drove her back to the penthouse in silence. When she walked through the heavy steel doors, the apartment felt like a tomb.
She walked into Leo’s empty room. The small bed was perfectly made. The wooden blocks were neatly stacked in the corner. She sank to the floor, burying her face in her hands, sobbing quietly. She had lost her son. She had lost her freedom. She was a prisoner in a gilded cage, married to a man who hated her but wouldn't let her go.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed in her pocket.
Evelyn froze. Adrian had confiscated her phone at the clinic. She had no phone.
She looked down. It wasn't her phone. It was a small, cheap burner phone, slipped into the pocket of her coat. She didn't know how it got there.
With trembling fingers, she flipped it open. There was a single text message from an unknown number.
She opened it. The screen glowed in the dark room.
*"They think the sedative was to make him sick. They are wrong. It was to make him sleep. We are coming for the heir tonight. Tell Adrian to look out the window."*
Evelyn’s blood turned to ice. She slowly raised her head and looked toward the massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.
Down below, fifty stories down, a black van was parked directly in front of the building's main entrance. And the headlights were slowly turning off.
