Evelyn’s screams tore through the reinforced walls of the penthouse, raw and desperate. "Adrian! Open the door! He has Sarah! He has her!"
She pounded her fists against the solid oak until her knuckles bruised. The hallway remained dead silent. The electronic lock glowed a menacing, unyielding red.
Then, a sharp, mechanical *beep* echoed from the door panel. The red light flickered, turned yellow, and then shattered into a shower of sparks.
With a deafening *c***k*, the heavy door was kicked inward, flying off its top hinge and crashing onto the bedroom floor.
Adrian stood in the doorway. He wasn't breathing hard. He wasn't panicked. He held a heavy, black tactical baton in his right hand, his dark eyes sweeping the room with lethal precision. When his gaze landed on Evelyn, clutching the cheap burner phone to her chest, his expression hardened into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury.
He crossed the room in three massive strides. Evelyn flinched, expecting him to yell, but he didn't. He simply reached out, his large hand wrapping around her wrist, and pried the phone from her fingers.
"Give it back!" she cried, struggling against his iron grip. "Sterling has Sarah! We have to call the police!"
Adrian ignored her. He looked at the small, cheap device in his hand. He pressed the power button. The screen lit up, showing the missed video call from Richard Sterling. Adrian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle feathered in his cheek.
"You brought an unsecured, untraceable device into a locked-down secure facility," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "You compromised the perimeter. Do you have any idea what you've done, Evelyn?"
"I was trying to save my cousin!" Evelyn shouted, tears streaming down her face. "Sterling sent me a video. He has Sarah tied up. He said he's coming for me!"
Adrian’s head snapped up, his eyes locking onto hers. For a fraction of a second, the cold mask slipped, revealing a flash of terrifying, obsessive protectiveness. But it vanished instantly, replaced by glacial calculation.
"Show me," he commanded.
Evelyn quickly unlocked the phone and opened the video gallery, playing the recorded call. Sterling’s bruised face filled the small screen, his malicious grin and the image of a terrified, bound Sarah playing out in the quiet room.
Adrian watched the video in silence. When it ended, he didn't look at Evelyn. He pulled out his secure, encrypted phone and dialed a number.
"Marcus. Bring James to the study. Now. And bring the security logs for the clinic hallway from three days ago."
He hung up and finally looked at Evelyn. "Get dressed. Wear the black tactical vest in your closet. We are leaving."
"Leaving? Where? Adrian, Sarah is in danger!"
"I know where she is," Adrian said coldly. "But before I go to collect my wife's cousin, I need to find out how Sterling got a burner phone into your pocket while you were under my direct protection."

Ten minutes later, Evelyn stood in the corner of the study, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was wearing the lightweight, bulletproof vest Adrian had forced her into. It felt heavy, a physical reminder of the war they were in.
Adrian sat behind his massive mahogany desk. The door opened, and Marcus walked in, dragging James—Adrian’s loyal assistant of five years—by the arm. James looked pale, his hands trembling violently.
"Sir, please," James stammered, his voice cracking. "I don't know what this is about. I've been loyal—"
"Sit," Adrian commanded.
James collapsed into the leather chair opposite the desk. Adrian turned his laptop around so James could see the screen. It was a high-definition security video from the clinic hallway three days ago.
Evelyn leaned forward, her breath catching. On the screen, she saw herself crying in the hallway after Leo's allergic reaction. She saw James approach her, offering a comforting hand on her shoulder. But as he pulled away, his hand dipped into the pocket of her coat. He slipped the small, black burner phone inside.
The silence in the room was absolute.
James stared at the screen, his face draining of all color. "I... I can explain."
"There is nothing to explain," Adrian said, his voice smooth and deadly. "Richard Sterling paid you. How much, James? How much was my loyalty worth?"
James began to sob, burying his face in his hands. "Fifty thousand dollars. He paid off my gambling debts. He said it was just a phone. He said he just wanted to send her a message to scare you. I didn't know he was going to kidnap Sarah! I swear!"
Adrian stood up slowly. He walked around the desk, stopping right in front of James. He didn't yell. He didn't raise his voice. He just looked down at the man who had betrayed him.
"You compromised my wife's security. You allowed a hostile entity to communicate directly with her inside my home," Adrian said, his voice a silken whisper. "In my world, James, betrayal is not a mistake. It is a terminal condition."
Adrian looked at Marcus. "Transfer James's remaining personal assets to his mother's account. Then call the police and hand over the evidence of his corporate espionage and bribery. Let the state deal with the financial crimes."
Marcus nodded, grabbing James by the arm. "Come on, James."
"Wait," Adrian said softly.
Marcus stopped. Adrian reached out and grabbed James’s right hand—the hand he had used to type the codes, the hand he had used to slip the phone.
"You used this hand to betray me," Adrian murmured. He looked at Marcus. "Break it."
Evelyn gasped, covering her mouth. "Adrian, no! Please, don't!"
Marcus didn't hesitate. He twisted James’s wrist with a sickening, sharp *c***k*. James screamed in agony, collapsing to his knees, clutching his mangled hand.
"Get him out of my sight," Adrian said, not even flinching at the scream. "And sterilize the penthouse. I want every device, every wire, and every piece of furniture scanned for bugs."
As Marcus dragged the weeping, broken man out of the room, Adrian turned to Evelyn. His dark eyes were burning with a cold, obsessive fire.
"You see now, Evelyn?" he said, stepping closer to her. "You see why I lock the doors? You see why I control every breath you take? Because the enemy is not just outside. It is inside. And I will burn the world to ash before I let anyone touch what is mine."
He reached out, his fingers gently but firmly gripping her chin, forcing her to look into his eyes. "Now. We are going to get Sarah. And when we do, I am going to make Richard Sterling wish he was never born."
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the study burst open again.
Leo ran in, his small chest heaving, his face pale and terrified. In his small hands, he was clutching a heavy, black rectangular device with a blinking red light and a digital screen.
"Daddy!" Leo cried out, his voice echoing in the room. "I found this in the bad man's bag! It was beeping!"
Evelyn’s blood ran cold. She looked at the device. It was a military-grade C4 detonator. The digital screen was counting down.
*00:59... 00:58... 00:57...*
Adrian’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated shock. He lunged forward, snatching the device from Leo’s hands. He looked at the screen, then up at the reinforced walls of the penthouse.
"Marcus!" Adrian roared, his voice shaking the glass walls. "The structural pillars! He rigged the pillars!"
*"Sir!"* Marcus’s voice crackled over the intercom, panicked for the first time. *"The security system just locked down! The blast doors are sealed! We can't open them!"*
Adrian looked at Evelyn, then down at Leo. He grabbed them both, pulling them tightly against his chest.
"Run," Adrian commanded, his voice a deadly, absolute register. "Run to the sub-basement. Now!"
