The apartment door slammed behind my mother. She collapsed on the sofa next to me. Her navy suit was wrinkled, and there was a patch of dust on the hem. “What a day I"ve had.” I didn"t look up from the television. After several seconds of silence, she tugged my knee. “So talk to me.” “I"m sorry, Mom. Just tired I guess. How was your day?” “Long and unproductive. I was in a meeting all morning with Mr. Thompson. Then I had lunch with one of the girls from accounting. After lunch was even worse. I had two major accounts to reconcile and the phone never stopped ringing.” She stood and started for her room. “Where you going?” I said. “Have a date.” She shot me a wide grin. “Big date.” As she disappeared into her bedroom, I turned the television back on. Her head popped out of her bedroom.
