Chapter 2 The White Family Dinner

561 Words
The sobbing college boy ended up as my husband. His name was Sean White, the sole heir to the White Group in Eastlyn City. The first time I brought him home, my father studied him for a long moment before asking, "You're really going to marry my daughter?" Sean nodded like an obedient student. "Yes." My father raised a brow. "Not afraid she'll walk all over you after the wedding?" Sean flushed and said quietly, "I won't do anything that will make her mad." My mother gave a faint smile, "That's the right attitude." Right there in front of my parents, Sean dropped to one knee and proposed. His voice was soft, but steady. "Sarah, I know people think this marriage is just a business deal between the White family and the Nelson family. But I know it isn't. I'm marrying you because I love you. From that bus onward, my life was already yours." It was so saccharine my father was completely at a loss. Still, I married him. For three years, life after marriage went smoothly. Sean was mild-mannered, easygoing, and easy on the eyes. In public, he was the Vice President of the White Group. At home, he was practically my devoted lapdog. He carried my things when we went out. He drew my bath when we came home. Arguments? Never happened. He used to say, "Peace at home means prosperity. Happy wife, happy life." Life had been pretty comfortable. Until the third year, when my mother-in-law, Elizabeth White, finally lost her patience. It was a White family dinner. Several key relatives and board members of the White Group were present. I assumed it was just a routine gathering until Elizabeth walked up holding a young woman's hand. The young woman wore a white dress, her makeup delicate, her gaze shyly drifting toward Sean. The second Sean saw her, his expression shifted. But Elizabeth only smiled, elegant and composed. "This is my maternal niece, Lily. I brought her today because I need to clarify something in front of everyone." She turned to me, contempt barely hidden. "Sarah, you've been married into the White family for three years, but still haven't had a child. Sean is the only heir. The White Group's hundred-billion empire can't go without a successor. Lily is healthy, well-bred, and I've watched her grow up. From now on, she'll bear Sean's baby in your place." The room fell dead silent. Elizabeth calmly lifted her coffee, as if she had just outlined a business plan rather than dropped a bomb. "Don't take it personally. You'll still be Mrs. White. Once the baby is born, it can be registered under your name. Lily won't be doing this for free either. The moment she's carrying a White heir, I'll give her 50 million." It was ridiculous. Another woman would sleep with my husband, use the White family's money, and make me raise the kid? That logic hit me straight in the face. Sean reacted even faster than I did. He sprang to his feet, voice breaking, "Mom, have you lost it?" Elizabeth frowned. "Watch your tone!" Sean pulled out his phone, hands shaking as he searched for a number. I asked, "What are you doing?" He looked like the world had ended. "Booking a vasectomy. A man's purity is his dignity. No one touches me except my wife."
