Chapter 38 It was dawn, and the chains were grumbling. Eugene had passed the second night huddled in the passenger seat of his van, afraid to sleep in the back where the chains might overcome him. They were angry. “I keep telling you,” he said sleepily, “there was nothing else to do.” But the muttering continued. Eugene knew that there was no point in trying to explain things all over again—that he’d been identified, and that the police would soon come to his house, and that he had to flee and take all the chains with him.
