ROSELYN’S POV
The moon was still high when we left the refuge. Darius didn’t look back, Neither did I Yet as the narrow path disappeared behind us, I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were leaving the only place where I had felt even a little safe since Roland… My chest tightened, I forced myself to keep walking.
The forest welcomed us with silence, Mist curled around the ancient trees hiding the path beneath our feet. Darius walked several paces ahead, his movements as quiet as the breeze weaving through the branches. He never seemed to stumble, Never hesitated, It was as if he had walked these woods his entire life.
I, on the other hand, nearly tripped over another root. A firm hand caught my arm before I hit the ground.
“Watch your footing.”
“I am.”
“No.” His voice remained calm.
